Which would you buy - Canon 5D Mk2, or 7D

If buying a used camera which of the two would you choose and why.

I know the Mk2 is full frame, but are the newer components such as focussing and speed better in the 7D and possibly outweighing therefore the benefits of full frame.

Intrigued as to which camera, other people would use of these two and the reason why.

I am really tempted by the 7d as I have some lenses which are no good for full frame. But I have never tried a full frame camera! So what really is the benefit apart from a bigger image?

Neither. Choose one from used 1Ds mk2, mk3 or 1DIV or new 5D mk3 depending on your budget. All are better than the 2 you've mentioned, prices vary...

The 1D 4, is way beyond the potential budget which covers a 7d or a mk2 and the 1D 3 must be 6 or 7 years old in technology - so why are these so much better ?

Depends what you want to use it for, weddings etc. I'd go for 5D or sport/wildlife I'd chose the 7D

Andy - interesting point - I guess portrait and weddings you benefit from the bigger image, whilst the other 2 gain from increased speed and the extra crop factor in lenses.

Where would you place macro, and landscape and similar ie flowers etc in context of the two ?

Remembering that I have never owed either camera, for landscape, flowers etc I would go for the 5d as focus speed and crop factor are un important on most occasions. I've never done any macro work but if it's a moving target then the focus speed may be useful.

Is focussing speed better on the 5d because its full frame do you think ?

I know the shooting fps is supposed to be quicker on the 7d

For image quality I'd go for the 5D as there have been discussions over the 7D's image quality from day one. The 7D may very well have a more advanced focus system but that doesn't interest me personally, it may matter to you.

So it may come down to IQ v focus system as I doubt that many would choose the 7D over the 5D for potential image quality.

Having owned both simultaneously my rule of thumb was; if it moves - 7D, if it doesn't move - 5DII.

I have both a 7d and a 5d2 and it's the 5d2 that gets used most, 'everyday' photo's, landscapes and macro. I keep the 7d for use with 60mm macro and when I need more reach, with a 70-300vc for now until I get something longer.

I've taken similar macros with both a 7d/60mm and a 5d2/100L if that's relevant / you want to compare?

I went for the 7D as I managed to get mine for an excellent price and the extra 300-400 for the 5D didn't really seem worth it for my uses. Also keep in mind that if you go full frame lenses will be significantly more expensive.

There are some expensive APS-C lenses and of course many lenses are simply not available in APS-C only mount. Most primes for example are FF as are several if not all of the longer zooms.

You can use both types of lens on a 7D, but not on a 5D. If you are just considering lens choice, then the 7d is more versatile.
