Since you budgeted £350 for the Tamron I presume you going for the VC version? The non VC version gets better rep on the forums and is sharper and for the price difference between the two you can afford to buy yourself a a good tripod which is something that will be useful as you progress with your photography. As you appear to be a beginner I would advise against biting the L bug and don't go investing into the premium glass straight away. I know it's tempting to look for any excuse to get that red ring now but the money could be spent more wisely in developing other aspects of your kit.
I don't know the extent of your photographic "history" but if you just got into it then you're in danger of investing into a glass that you may not use that much later on. I only had my first DSLR for over a month and I always thought I'd want to photograph landscapes but as I started getting out there and doing it I realised that I'm actually interesting in other subjects and as a result I'm finding my Sigma 18-50mm redundant now and gathering dust. I did get it second hand though so I will not be losing a huge amount of money if I decided to sell it.
Another point goes back to being able to develop your kit further although of course I could be wrong on this one since I don't know what you already have with your 40D. For the price of that one L lens, you could get yourself a Tamron 17-50mm, good tripod, backpack, starter flash, memory and still have cash left over. That will give you a bigger versatility in what you can do and again when you move on with your photography, you can still use all that kit and simply buy a new lens when you decided that your equipment is truly limiting you.
