Hi all,

I've shot this photo of my son yesterday with following settings -
Aperture mode
f - 4.6
focal length - 220mm
Flash - No flash
WB - Incandescent
ISO - 1000
Lighting - natural light via. big french window and 3 incandescent bulbs on

My question is - My son was wearing a bright white baby-grow..however, for some reason this appears bluish on the photo..Not sure if this is to do with WB setting or lack of lighting ??

Any comments greatly recd...thanks.

If the catch lights in his eyes are from the window then it is wb, they also have a blue cast and if they are the window should be white. If you have a raw file you can use them as a white point to reset wb

Those incandescent lights or whatever they are, are blue - probably daylight balanced. The camera's 'incandescent' white balance setting refers normal tungsten light bulbs which are orange/yellow, so the camera has boosted the blue.

You should be able to pull it back in post processing.

In such instances (difficult lighting) I would always shoot in RAW to correct the white balance later....this is much easier than trying to correct colour on a JPEG.

Or a custom WB off the white baby-grow would have fixed it in-camera.

You had a mix of natural and incandescent lighting - I'd have shot in RAW or used awb. Doesn't matter really, you've got a cute shot of your little boy.

It's true, but I find WB a lot easier to fix later on....I find WB can change subtly even if the sun goes behind the clouds, so rather than keep adjusting (perhaps not always to exactly the right settings) I prefer to shoot RAW to have the ability to adjust later.....maybe I'm just rubbish at gettin it right in-camera...I need the backup!

Although AWB does a decent job most of the time, I wouldn't recommend it indoors. Fine for outdoors...it can't really get natural light too wrong, but I have taken AW balanced pictures seconds apart indoors to find that the balance is totally different.

Thanks a ton for all your replies..Yes, will try tweaking this on PS to get it right (hopefully, when I fix my lap-top soon), and probably try RAW next time..well, more than anything I just wanted to know what went wrong as I thought I had set the WB right - I think two answers here really stand out, Richard's and Pauls...
a. The problem could be because the bulbs were daylight balanced and not a true conventional incandescent
b. The light from the widow (natural light) is mixing with the room light..From what I rember Neel was facing the window with the room light off the ceiling..So predominantly his baby-grow was lit in natural light..(Once I accidently used Incandescent WB setting for a landscape pic resulting in a bluish tinge)..yes, makes sense now.

Thanks a lot everybody for the inputs. Do appreciate. Will try remembering for next time.

If you can't fix it in post try a black and white conversion ;)
