My students shoot horses hooves. 2000+ shots per student. I do just fine with my Canon SX1 but got a 60D with a 100mm f/2.8 L and its amazing. However when we shoot the bottoms of hooves the distance is about 12 to 15 inches (30 to 40cm) away. The 100mm in not for me in this working distance, I need to be much closer. The bottom of the hoof is about as wide as your hand with your fingers totally spread out. This image needs to be in full frame. The other considerations are light and wiggle. Its best not to use a flash so my 2.8 is good. I need need depth of field at the end of that distance so we can see tipped heel to toe views. Im not a pro clearly but Im hoping you can advise. My homepage shows photos using the 100mm on all of them. For me this can be a fixed lens or zoom.
