What do you think of the Canon 500d?

How long has it been out? and is it still out or has the 550d taken over it?

what nikon is the rival for the canon 500d?

Cheers

I bought my 500D apprximately a month ago and love it. I haven't played with a camera (except P&S) in donkeys years and wanted something to play with and the 500D ticked all the right boxes...

No expert but very happy with some of the shots I've already taken...

pretty much the same for me
had mainly sony p&s cameras up until i got the 500d about 6 months ago and love it
i did have a canon g10 but struggled to get the best out of it

i bought mine in november and love it!! its my first DSLR and i've not had any problems, plenty of features to keep you learning. I also wanted to have the video option for a few things so i went for the 500 over the 450. As far as im aware you can still get the 500 even though the 550 is out. I had a play this evening with a 550 a friend has and i prefer the feel of the buttons on my 500 (yes, im heavily biased)

Would 100% reccommend it as a first DSLR!

500D is a great camera. I've had it since Nov 2009 and loving it. 550D is not quite a replacement, it has some advanced features from the higher range but you do pay the price for it.

Untill the 550D came out Canon still offered both the 500D & the 450D (there are still a few 450Ds about if you look). So it looks like the 500D will probably carry until the 600D appears.

Nikon wise you're looking at a D5000.

Had one since last summer and pretty satisfied with it

My main observation has been that the 15mp sensor requires good quality lenses to make the most of it
Use mine with a Canon 17-55mm and very impressed with the picture quality, struggles a lot with the kit lens though

Nice and compact, seems well made and has a fair amount of the main features directly accessible from buttons rather than wading through menus. The screen is great, very bright and clear, considerably better I think than a friends 450D

Never used the video so no idea what its like for quality or even how to make it work
