Hi
Can anyone give me a brief review of a Nikon D2Xs, i have been offerd one from a friend and to be honest i Know about the D300 and D700 but i know nothing about this.

hmmm cheap not really.
He brought it for his company in September and paid £2,400, the shutter count is 765 as he has hardly used it, it is boxed with everything and he wants £1,750.
I have no idea if that is a good price, or if the camera is suited to sports or all round photography.
just hoped some guys on here who do or have used them could give me a run down.

For just over £300 more you could get a D3 with a average shutter count.
I would do that.
Sounds too expensive

as konastab says, its a bit pricey but if you could chip it down to around £1100 its a steal

Sounds a lot, same as a brand new D700 and cant see it being better than that?

Just checked ebay for you and the current price appears to be £600+ with an average of about £750-£800

Thanks, i had a D700 but found the metering to be awful and once the sun came out i had to use compensation on every photo taken which i hated even if it was a quick fix in PS.
I thought if a camera costs 2k it should at least be able to cope with a bit of sun.

i think £1,700 is as good as i will get on price and that is the real top end of my budget which rules out a D3.

I have been using a D2Xs for nearly 4 years, the ONLY reason to opt for a more modern camera is the better high ISO ability - this camera is brill - simples

That said, the asking price really is too much at anything about £1,000 IMO now, even though (when I got mine) this was THE best Pro camera Nikon made and I paid £3,400. I can imagine mine still going strong at 10 yrs old :)

yes i have just check completed listing on ebay too, looks like it is not worth anything like he wants although there is a new one on ebay for £2.2k.

Looks like that is a non starter, thanks for youe help.

Just a point to note too, isn't the D2xs a crop sensor? Just be aware of that seeing as the D700 and D3 are being brought up which are 2 full frame cameras

The D2xs is worth £800 tops. It's a very good camera, but the metering wont be that much different from the D700. When I got my D3 the metering was a little hotter than the D2x, but it's designed to be. Dialing in -0.3ev in the settings menu got it spot on. My D700 is the same. The meters in the D3 and D700 are far better than any other camera I've used.

Very good camera - I used one for three years before we upgraded to D3 and D3x - much better than the basic D2x as the colour management seemed better and the AF also seemed a bit more 'crisp' and lively (it was a feel rather than anything concrete)...

Wouldn't pay over £1k for one, not even Super-Mint - for a little over £2k you can get a second-hand D3...

Metering is fine when you get used to it (slight over-exposure) - used it in Iraq and Afghanistan where it's very bright in the summer months...
Coped well with the heat and dust (midday temps of +60C) and also rain, snow and ice when working in Norway and the Arctic.

What he said :D

Nice camera, used to have the D2x. Wouldn't pay over the odds for one now though.

Theres no comparrison in low light, the new bigger sensor in the D3-D700 coupled with different processing makes a huge difference. And theres no way it's worth that kind of money, buy a D700 you wont be sorry.

Hi Folks.
Thanks for the input.
I am about to send out my Nikon kit to 4 lucky buyers this week and i will have a healthy bank account but no SLR or lenses.
My camera bag looks very sad all alone and empty bar a few filters awaiting some new lens.
I will just have to keep looking, i think if Nikon are about to reveal the new D700 in what ever spec, the price of the old D700 will crash so i will hold out until March and see what happens, plus the 5D MKII seems so much better value at this moment.

Better value how? I've spoken to two people recently that have sold their 5D's and bought D700's. The reason? The focusing was always out on the canon. Both were child photographers and they were saying the 5D couldn't keep up. I've not tried one myself but I'm glad I use Nikon if this is the case.
