Yes
..... setting up / joining a studio club?

OK, I've been thinking (which makes a change!) about getting some lighting equipment, but to be honest don't have a clue where to start.

What I do have available thanks to work, is space to play - we have a spare unit at work approx. 1000 sqft (just under 14x8m), which would be a cost free (aside from getting it setup) venue.

Would anyone be interested in helping me set up a studio club?

Now I am sure there will be a million and one things I've not considered, but with the help of a few like minded individuals, could we do it?

Work is based in Heckmondwike, West Yorks. The unit is very secure, with a small office and toilet facilities, very clean but "industrial" - it will need painting etc. Not heated, which may be a problem at the moment though!

I am going snowboarding for a week from tomorrow, so plenty of time to mull it over. If anyone is interested, have a good think, and let me know!

Cheers Bradders.

Small world, I live in between Batley and Heckmondwike.

Studio photography is not really my bag though :| but may be interested in hearing more.

Well, if you change your mind, let me know! The unit is near Ponderosa.

Pics of it to follow....

Just popped out into the bitterness of a Yorkshire lunchtime to take a few photo's, so you can all see what space I have available...

The car belongs to a mate, but will be moved. Gives a sense of scale though.

You could have a nice setup there

I could if I knew where to start!! That's the reason for the open club offer!! I am hoping that someone with a bit of nouse will be able to help out in exchange for using the facilties!

You might say I am more interested in the time and enthusiasm of others than any suggestion of collecting club subs!

All the best with your project. If it had been in N.Ireland I would be knocking on your door.I will have to do with kitchen & garage for now :)

Why don't you live in London :annoyed: !!!

Indeed! I too wish you were taling about a site down south, but all the best with it anyway.

I'm not too sure that I'd have posted a location and pictures of the external appearance on the web if I were thinking of putting high value equipment inside. But I suppose that can be said of anywhere really. They all need adequate security and you do say that your site is very secure.

Seems like the start of an interesting project . Sorry I can't really help with how to setup etc . I wouldn't even like to start thinking about the long list of things that you'd need . If you need any sort of manual labour help though I'm quite happy to lend a hand if I'm free. You have fallen on to a good unit from the looks of it and all for free you lucky person .

Hi Bob,

Yes, the place is very secure, so no fears there.

The place is riddled with CCTV inside and out (we are in the supply business), along with central stn alarms (video and intruder), physical security, manned guarding, police response etc etc etc. We have control of the whole site, which is over a heavily gated bridge! Overkill, well maybe, but we do carry a fair bit of stock!

If a few bits of lighting and camera gear went, I think that would be the least of my worries!! It is all fully insured, having said that.

Cheers, Bradders.

John,

If this gathers interest and gets off the ground, I will give you a shout to lend a hand. Thanks for the offer. As to the unit, we've been looking to let it for 2 years without success. Lucky, yes I guess so (but not free, in the true sense - the company is already paying for it!) - but anyone joining in can also consider themselves lucky also!

Cheers Bradders.

I hope that you get interest from other folk . This could be quite a good venture if it comes off .

Just thought your first shoot could be with the quattro not seen one of those for years :)

That's very impressive Mark - and you are making me more and more jealous!

All the best, Bob

I have a rack of lighting gear and a head full of knowledge but what I do not have, is somewhere in Yorkshire to live I am based in Herts now ... this would be a great project and I know it would be a success because there are a million people who want to learn photo skills from how to turn a camera on to advanced lighting and photoshop and printing etc etc..

All the very best, if a rentable property becomes available let me know LOL

Hmm. I might possibly be interested in doing something, but I'd want to know what the arrangement would be? Are you the owner of the building or does it belong to your boss? If we did do something with it, twelve months along the line is there any possibility we would be out on our ears so to speak? Is this for hobby use only or could we use the space for a potential business?

Depending on the answers I could be very interested indeed.

Regarding the car - I restored one of those a few years back, very nice car but a pig to work on!

OK, could be my last post before I get back from France now, hopefully with full use of my limbs, and depending on whether 'our lass' approves of me skipping the packing this evening!

The idea is originally more of a hobby type thing Ste. I have control of the site and aside from the needs and requirements of the day job which must come first, there are no external influences over the use as long as I control it. The main part of the site is used for the day job - we occupy unit 1, in the photo, which is about 20K sqft. Units 2 & 3 are currently serving purpose as "overflow" or junk storage, if you prefer - stuff we need to sort before binning! These are still up for rental as and when (6K sqft and 4.5K sqft respectively). Unit 4 is our target. To let it officially, we need the landlord's approval to vet the tennant - as it is rather small, the only official enquiries have been from prospects that would not pass vetting. One of the main reasons it's still vacant.

Not sure how it would stand if the premises were turned into a professional studio - I would need to check with the landlord - but while ever I am holding the keys, there are no issues - after all, we are already paying for it.

The Quattro belongs to a mate, who bought it intending to do it up - he's having work done on his house / garage at the moment, and needed a temporary space to store it - I am sure he would not object to it being the subject of a shoot!

Hmm, so much for my last post - you've got me thinking there Daryl - maybe startup as a club, get sorted, and then rent it out - club recouping the money. Hmm, payback for everyone (including the repayment of purchase costs for lighting gear etc - or even rental if someone has some spare in storage!!).....

Please add more comments, and if I can get a wireless hook in France, I will chat more from there - failing that, I will be back Monday 25th.

Cheers Bradders.

Well, I'm now back in Blighty, in body if not in mind (still bouncing down the slopes, you see!)

Thanks for all the info Daryl. Certainly much food for thought.

So, to begin again, who's up for a nosey, to see what we can get done...?

Cheers, Bradders.
