No idea why... well a few ideas... Went for a tooth pulled this mornign and after the injection (no worries with needles me) and a poke about she refused to pull the tooth.. too adjitated and didnt want to continue in case we got into a mess... i think she meant half way through and i wouldnt let her finish maybe? So now its the hospital.. sleepies and out.. which is embarresing :(

I ahve no problem going.. dont feel scared.. just when I get in the chair and it becomes arrrgh...
 
I dont mind admitting that I am terrified of the dentists. I had a bad experience as a teenager, and I have hated it ever since!
 
Nothing in this world terrifies me more than the dentist, I've been loads of times had fillings extractions etc so I can't explain why?
Ive been having problems with one of my teeth for a while but keeep putting off going lol
 
Generally I've been lucky with my teeth, so no big problems to date, but it really is never going to be pleasant.

Did have problems with one dentist, who always insisted that the 'hygienist' should have a scrape around. Just an excuse to let some sadistic b1tch to inflict some not inconsiderable discomfort and then charge for the privilege. Knocked that one on the head a long time ago.

Typically I go every six months and am in and out in 10 mins..
 
the missus pops a diazapam before she goes (well, gets taken) to the dentist. its the only way she gets through.

had to have a semi-conscious sedation twice for some work too. they dont (apparently, or at least this dentist) like doing full unconscious sedation these days.
 
Many moons ago I studied to be a Dental Surgeon at Guy's Hospital in London.....great fun especially when it came to practicing on each other or local "volunteers". The nervous ones were the best :naughty:

When I was 9, I had gas at the dentists surgery for the removal of four back teeth to make way for the wisdoms. From that afternoon, I was paralyised from the waste down for five and a half weeks (of a six week school Summer holiday :(). And yet, I would still rather be knocked out for dental work to this day as I hate dental injections more than anything else. In fact, for anything other than really heavy duty work, I now refuse the injection.
 
i have panic attacks as soon as they get near me.. then i met a great dentist and we got some of the treatment done that needed doing then root canal boom... another panic attack.. since then i have moved and i am still waiting for that to be done..
 
When I was 16 and got my first filling, the dentist drilled the tooth without anaesthetic. I wasn't even offered the option. The pain was indescribable, everyone in the waiting room knew exactly how much pain I was in.

Before that day, going to the dentist never bothered me.
 
i think most people have had a bad time at a dentist some time in there life spare a thought for the ones that dont get gas or a jag like my wife she cant get the gas or any jags thats for fillings or what ever lol now that takes guts
 
My first dentist in the North east did a filling on me without a Jab and never again hats off to anyone who has to deal with that.
 
Havnt been for about 25 years now, teeth are fine, my old mercury fillings havnt killed me. I never had a problem with them until the last one was a bit tight with the numbing juice, it wore off before the drilling was done and he wouldnt re-inject. Pain was intense. If a doctor tried that they would be struck off! They used to numb you up enough for you to be dribbling all day, it just seems to be a cost cutting exercise to only put enough in to last the 10 minutes they think the job will take. Things may have changed in the last 20 years or so but im not going to find out.
 
Me too really dread going and hate needles too !
 
I had a root canal done 3 years ago, took 3 (or was it 4) sessions to get all the muck out of the roots, one root was hidden behind another, hence 3 session (or was it 4). Just had the tooth capped, the original drilling hurt like Hell, then the depth gauge thing to ensure all the pulp was out hurt like Hell too. So I dont like root canals at all.
Just before Xmas another tooth was hurting and yup another canal treatment was called for. So I went over the road from where I work, they promised it wouldnt hurt, ex Army dentist apparently, that put the fear of God into me. Anyway, he's done the work and I didnt feel a thing at all during the drilling, depth gauging etc, wallet feels a bit sore as it wasnt NHS.
So from being pain averse I can say it doesnt have to hurt, it would seem my original dentist didnt realise my nerves dont take up the aneasthetic at all well and that was why he hurt me before.
Actually I have just let him do the crown (he's a bit cheaper than the London dentist £400 near home as opposed to up to £800 for a crown in London)on the first rooted tooth and that didnt hurt at all despite lots of grinding and drilling, so it makes you wonder why we have nerves in the tooth at all. All my local dentist could say that was without a nerve a tooth often becomes brittle, hence needing a crown.

Tony you have my sympathy, tooth pain is dreadful.

not my favourite place to go but am going to get the last 3 stumps out on Saturday. Then wait until the gum settled down and get the teef adjusted...
 
As a small boy I had all my top teeth out under gas - like Kipax I can still vividly remember the smell and taste of gas. :p

Up to about 25 years ago I had a dentist whose name was Dr. Butcher...... Root canal work was fun.

Up here in Oxfordshire I've not had much done, but the last (private) dentist did some work which subsequently became infected and then wanted to charge large amounts of money to fix it. I've not seen a dentist in 6 years, though I'll need to do so soon - I'm not afraid, but I am reluctant.
 
I like the dentist (or my dental practice), it's the only medical profession I think that they can fix/repair/replace everything. You are always better off coming out than you go in.
 
I can't say that I ever enjoy going to the Dentist, but if you want to keep your own teeth, its a necessary evil.

The bit that I really don't like is the cost of treatment :(

Our dentist went private years ago, but my wife and I have stayed with him, because he is good at what he does.

I'm scared stiff of going to the dentist. I can vividly remember going to the dentist as a kid and having gas. I also remember the drill cable wizzing around the pulleys and the smell of burnt bone/tooth. The vibrations and sounds of the drill. Urgh, still makes me shudder!

I only go now when there's a real problem - not good I know. Just goes to show how your childhood fears shape you for life.

maybe its a generation thins.. my wife and kids go regular... I go if I need to..

for the record.. no pain here.. one tooth broke and left a sharp bit ripping my tounge.. they padded it ..tounge healed...but broke tooth needs to come out :)
 
Went to dentist when I was a child. Got put under with gas and had a bizarre nightmare. Traumatised ever since :eek:
 
I think it is a generation thing. My wife and kids also go regularly, in fact the little one really looks forward to going. They rarely need any work doing - not like me - when I go it's root canal treatment or extraction :eek:
 
Never had a problem going to the dentist. Actually, I prefer it to taking a car for an MOT!

My first experience with dentist's was at about the age of 6 or 7 when I had 6 teeth removed by chloroform on the back kitchen table by the dentist who was accompanied by our doctor. At a later age I had to have other teeth removed this time by using gas, yes I can still taste it to. Late school age until I was 21 I had NHS treatment by a local dentist who I can only say would have been kicked out of the gestapo for cruelty, not once was I given the needle for any fillings that where needed. With a very good practice now, nothing is a problem for them, but o the nightmares.

I think it's more the thought of it or just fear of the unknown.
I can't say that I've had a bad experience, in fact the only dental work I've ever had done was a temporary filling in one of my milk teeth when I was a kid.
Just the thought of someone coming at my face with a hand full of metal instruments is enough to give me a panic attack though.
 
You guys must've had horrible dentists or something. I used to love going to our dentist as a kid. In fact we would draw pictures for him to put on the wall. Never scared even when he brought out the big needle. Helps that my first filling was two yrs ago and i needed my canines removed when i was a teenager.
 
My first experience was way back in 1950/51, don't think there was such a thing as a good dentist in those days, thankfully things have improved since then.
