I got up this morning and whilst the light was not great it was not raining and only showers were forecast. I decided to pop out and finish off the part used roll of film that was in the RB67.
Got up to the Hoe at about 7.15 and aside from a couple of tramps sleeping rough in the shelters there were only a couple of other people around (which wouldn't be the case an hour or so later) and started to take a few shots, after about 20 minutes or so I found a potentially nice image, backdrop of the wedding cake and Hoe promenade complete with Smeatons Tower in the background but with a couple of pigeons on a railing in the foreground. I set the camera on the tripod and started to compose the image and get the focus where I wanted it. A few minutes earlier a Council Transit van had pulled up about 80 yards up the street. Just as I was about to take the image the birds flew off as the council worker had deliberately walked towards them to frighten them away, he then turned away slightly and walked back towards me. 'Opportunity lost' and the red mist descended.
"What are you doing mate", he asked, I said 'well I was taking some pictures of those birds you f###### muppet', 'oh sorry' he said with no sincerity 'theres some more up there' I was absolutely seething!
What did he get out of it? There was no one else around, there was absolutely no reason why he had to walk towards the birds and WTF was he doing out walking around the Hoe at 7.40am on a bank holiday. No wonder we pay so much in council tax.
On another point, I was really disappointed with the lack of maintenance around the Hoe area, Smeatons Tower is a disgrace and needs painting badly, there are other areas of neglect too. I can only assume that these things have been left to slide until the council recover some of the money lost in the Iceland banks fiasco!
