Why bother?

My next point is somewhere inbetween all of you. I don't feel that I'm good enough yet to start offering photos for critique. I'm doing this about 3/4 months now, and even though I feel I'm taking pretty good shots here and there, I'm still far behind most people. So I'm finding the 52s as a great way to try take a photo, and get some good critique back.

I think you would be surprised if all of us who've been doing this for years admitted, that for every good picture we take, how much rubbish we discard, or just average pictures we keep.

I have to say that I do absolutely agree with this sentiment. There are shots that are posted where the poster makes pains to point out that it is straight from the camera, no PP.

I can not understand why anyone would post a picture for crit that is straight from the camera (unless they are pointing out a lens, camera issue etc) as I think that you want to post your best surely? The chances are that a little tweak of curves or levels will improve the pic no end, yet still people don't do it :bonk: I do then stuggle with the occassions when people have got offended when something has been pointed out that could be sorted with 2 mins infront of a PC.

Not everyone has PP facilities and some people (like myself) just like to post pictures to see what other people think about them. If they want to offer advice on how to improve then so be it.

We could just make it easy: If you're asking for critique, please say so... also, please also say if the images are just for the viewing pleasure (or otherwise) of the forum members...

'seemples'...

totally correct. this is the most basic thing ever, and something we are thinking about here..

I have asked other pros to crit an image for me before that was c***. The reason? I knew what was wrong with it but it was a complex lighting situation and I had not got it anywhere near technically correct. I need to know, not what was wrong, but how to put it right.

So I can see both sides of that particular coin. Good crit is good for ego massage but helpful crit is far more valuable. :)

this is the idea of the forum Alison, so we can share images, and learn from each other.

Over the past couple of years, the standard of photography that has been posted here has declined, but the help and advice has not, unfortunately you will ALWAYS have people who cant take it when people are honest (but not rude) Some of the best photographers we have had here are no longer here because people couldnt take their crit. Pook and PeteMC being 2 good examples, Pete still pops in, but doesnt post anymore, which is a shame, both had a lot to give.

The over-riding thing to remember is: Its a photography forum, you post images here if you want to share but more importantly if you want to improve. We have a dedicated section for images to receive a complete mauling images to receive indepth critique, as well as sharing forums where people can ask for crit or just show, we also have fluffy kittens for any images that have little merit but are funny, cute etc etc

as mentioned already, seeemples...:)

So are you saying that crit is ok if in the critique forum but for other forums people should only pass any sort of comment if the poster has said C&C welcome?

If that's aimed in my direction then I'll answer; no. Critique is fine wherever – we can always pick up some tips somewhere along the line - but it's best if the poster asks for it or hints they want it. What bothers me is the amount of cyberspace being devoted to duplicate shots in the critique forums that needn't have been posted in the first place.

Totally true. Maybe my stuff isn't everybody's cup of tea and – shock! horror! – it might not actually be that good, even though i am pro (angling shots are an acquired taste). However, I know when to post images - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that out. Flooding the crit sections with shots that just needn't have been taken is not a good thing.

If there were a limit to the number of shot we could post there would, I'm sure, be a radical overhaul of what is posted to make sure every posting counted....

there is a limit of 10 images in general sharing and 1 in indepth crit. we are looking at reducing the limit to 5

I don't hold any respect for someone's work just because they make a living from it. I judge it solely on their photos.
The staff photographer from the regional paper (who actually specialises in wildlife photography) where i live has been taking an ongoing series of photos of birds growing up on a lake. There was one on the front page a while ago that was incredibly out of focus, dull light and just generally looking like a rushed snapshot.
I had some photos of just about exactly the same composition of the same bird, doing the same thing, pin sharp and in gorgeous sun-rise light.

Nope...After much consideration I have decided that all idiots posting biff comments and technical queries that can easily be sorted by the simple expedient of reading the effin' manual will be treated to the full aspect of my ire - after all, I have a reputation to live down to...

When in doubt, shoot the buggers with a Luger - stylish and effective...

I can only agree, but I will probably keep quiet unless I'm having a bad day. I did lash out in a letter to Digital Photographer mag earlier this year when they wasted a quarter of a page on somebody who wanted to know what the ADep setting on his Canon camera did.
