Why can't I see my photos from one camera?

So.....long story short; I've recently taken proud ownership of a pair of Canon 5D mkii's and a mki EOS 1Ds (early noughties I suspect).
If I shoot on the 1Ds (RAW) then put the CF card into one of 5Ds in order to transfer to my PC or iMac it says the card is blank. The images cannot be seen on the camera screen, via Lightroom or via the Explorer in windows/mac, but put it back in the 1Ds and they appear fine again. Why can't I get them onto my computer? I think it has had a firewire port (not entirely sure but looks like it) but my computers don't have that and there is no USB connection like the 5D's have.
I've ordered a CF card reader to see if that helps. Do I need a cable to transfer from the 1Ds?
 
I suspect it's because Canon will have changed the RAW file spec between releasing the camera models and the 5Ds can't handle the file format of the 1Ds. It will, however, show an image on the camera screen as (as I understand it) RAW files have a small JPEG imbedded in them to allow you to see an image preview outside of dedicated RAW viewers.
 
Do the files show up when you explore the card through windows (or whatever OS it is?). If so, then as above, your version of LR/PS won't recognise them. Simply use Adobe's DNG convertor.
 
I seem to remember that 1Ds files are CR2's and later files are CRW's......if the new camera searches for CRW's then it won't find any on the card.

You can't see any files at all on the card through explorer or finder. I've not tried shooting jpeg, maybe I'll give that a go and see if they appear.
 
As above, when you use the card reader you'll see the files. The 5Ds are looking for a different filetype/folder structure to the format generated by the 1D so they don't display anything.

Buy a card reader.
 
Hey guys! I borrowed a CF card reader from work and it does the trick! :) cheers!
Just wondering now why the files are in TIF, is that still equivalent to CR2 or NEF?

They should be CR2's, check through the software or they might have been renamed as you were swapping cameras?

Just clear the cards and do some test shots and download. They really ought to be CR2. You have to go back a very long way to pre-date CRW for Canon RAW's (if ever - I'm not an expert on really early Canon digital - pre 2000), and the CRW was before CR2
