Why did my 50d freeze?

I was out with the camera today, attempting to take pics of swans in flight.
I took ten shots continuous and the camera froze completely.
I couldn't even turn it off. Eventually I took the battery out but when I replaced it those ten shots had gone. Any ideas what went wrong? :'(
 
You filled the buffer and the camera was busy saving them to the card is all. Canons ignore the request to turn the camera off if it's still saving to the card because this would result in loosing the photos and possibly corrupting the media device.

Nothing wrong with your 50D you just filled the buffer and worked the processor a bit :)
 
As you take the shots on burst mode, they are first stored in the camera's buffer, before being written to the card. This can take a short while if you are using a slow card! By removing the battery you have effectively wiped the buffer hence the missing pictures. While the small orange light is on next to the secondary wheel control on the back of the camera - leave it alone to do its thang! If you buy a faster card the write time will be reduced. :thumbs:
 
I am using an extreme iii. The orange light was not flashing and I left the camera alone for a minimum of 5 minutes while I rang my other half to whinge that the camera was stuck.:thinking:

Seriously... I just asked a mate at the Times if he'd managed to fix his 1d MkIII - it did the exact same thing - worked fine one minute then froze never to return. At least yours came back from the dead...
 
my 300d used to do it, i was never really sure why but i didnt have a problem with the 50d, havent used the 7d enough to find out yet..
 
Odd, never heard of that before and it's definitely never happened to me before :shrug:
 
My 450D does odd things at times. I've owned it for about 3 months and in that time I've had one error 99 and one instance where, after taking it away from my face, the screen wouldn't come back on. I had to remove the battery for a few minutes and replace for it to work.
