Why does Photoshop Camera RAW automatically increase Brightness and Contrast?

Its only recently occurred to me, but when I open a RAW file the brightness is +50 and the contrast is +25.

If I put the brightness down to 0 the image is really dark (lol obviously).

Am I getting something wrong in camera that PS is compensating for? Or does this happen with all RAW files?

Because RAW straight out the camera looks rubbish. The contrast and brightness adjustments are a first stab at making the picture looking half decent.

Sometimes if you click auto before you revert back to default, it pushes both sliders in the opposite directions and can help it in a similar way, it's easy to produce a photo with not enough contrast though i find when opening in for further editing. All good stuff though and enjoyable when you have a satisfying image to work on :)

Look likes all Guys here just pressing auto :D the point is that lightroom/camera raw just puting default/auto colors *** you need to get starting point. The best way is to make default preset which fits most of your photos. So everytime you will inport any RAWs, software will make you starting point you like ;)
