Yes
Follwing my thread about affordable 400 mm lens for a nikon d40 I read this on the ad for a 70-300vr on warehouse express
t offers a 4.3x zoom with a range of 70-300mm (105-450mm on a DX Nikon D-SLR) ?
is this right?
if so does it work same as a 400 lens . very confused?
Al

the sensor is a crop sensor ie smaller than you would find on a full frame camera (like d3 or d700) so the focal length of lenses on the d40 is multiplied by 1.5

confused me for ages but if you bear that in mind after a while it comes together.

Yes and no.

A 300mm lens is still a 300m lens regardless of it being on an a cropped or full-frame sensor, however, a 300m lens on a cropped sensor will have the equivalent field of view that you would get from a 400mm lens on a full-frame camera.

not quite , it will give the same field of view as a 105mm - 450mm lens would on a full frame camera its still only a 70-300mm focal length lens no matter what camera its fitted onto..

Does the D90 have a crop sensor too and if not would the image appear larger on the D40 with the same lens ?

Please explain as if you are talking to a complete numpty, 'cos you are.

Sean

The D90 has a crop sensor and would look the same as a D40 through the viewfinder, the same lens on a D3 or D700 in the same position would appear further away.

The only Nikon D-SLR's that have a Full-Frame sensor are the D700, D3 and D3x; all other Nikon D-SLR's have a Cropped sensor.

Hope this helps.
