Yes
..that a lot of my photos never look as sharp on the laptop as they do on my camera?

They look nice and pin sharp on the lcd screen, but then less so on the laptop.

User error?

Screen on the camera is just to small to make a proper assessment of sharpness, I just use it to check exposure and if it looks blurred or OOF on camera it gets binned, end of.

Yeah quite simply because the screen is smaller it appears to be sharper on the camera but once you see it on a monitor you can see how it really is.

Makes me sound like a right newbie, that question.

I need to get me a decent, yet cheap, PC so that I can load some decent, yet cheap, software. Then I can shoot in RAW and view the pics properly on a nice big screen, rather than my laptop

Have you downloaded Nikon View NX2?
Free download from Nikon which allows you to edit NEF as well as JPEG.
May not help you to get your pictures sharper but you will be able to view them :)

I haven't.

I've got a CD with P.E 8 on it somewhere. Got it from Morgans, just the CD, not the rest of the packaging. Need to get a PC, then find that CD, then learn how to use it.

Laptop isn't the way to go

Can you zoom on your LCD?

Can you zoom on your LCD?

Absolutely - I do this all the time as you really can't trust what you see on the back of the camera. A quick zoom in will let you know whether or not you are totally off-base in terms of focus. I see a sort of OK pic, zoom in and see something that really shouldn't be kept, so I delete.

That is exactly why I was asking the OP, if they can zoom then it will help them sort the issue i nthe same way you do.

It will good to know ^ ^

I sometimes found that pictures in DPP looked rather soft even if they were a pin sharp pic. I regularly zoom to 100%, not because I'm pixel peeping per se, but just to actually see whether it's sharp or not, as I sometimes cannot tell from the full view alone.

Simon, We need to get back to square one, hit the basics of focusing technique, image assesment on the lcd (which is an art in itself) and load up that software from morgan (which was the bargain of the year). Laptop is fine for the time being, no rush for a desktop yet.
Hop on the train mate!

Hey Simon,
Which shooting mode are you using? I found shooting in continuous gave me far more missed shots.

I think you've hit the nail on the head hear. Not all LCD screens are the same, some are pretty poor. There's a lot of difference between my laptop and desktop monitors. I have never done any photo editing on my laptop partly because the resolution is much lower.

Not sure about Nikon software, but the Canon software always shows the jpeg previews as blurry but the Raw sharp. Once you open them or open in Picasa/photoshop they're fine.
