Why is photography equipment so expensive?

Like a wafer you put some ice cream on.... go to Farmfoods and you'll get a shedload for a quid

That and the chips you make out of wafers don't taste as good as the ones from the chippy either

And the guy running the £4million IBM mainframe at work with the 50p camera integrated into his Nokia phone in his pocket wonders why photography equipment is so cheap compared to computers. ;)

You're comparing low end computing to mid-high end photography. Both markets have their mass low end (£300-£500 PCs, P&S cameras), the niche high end (hardcore gaming PCs, servers, DSLR cameras), and ultra high end (mainframes, hasselblads).

Of course, at the low end both computers and cameras seem to be merging with phones into a universal device which is enough for more and more people as time goes by. :)
