Why is the mirror on my D300 staying up for ages ?

Yes
There's (hopefully) a really simple answer to this - when I take a picture with my D300 the mirror seems to stay up for about a second before dropping back down again. Exposure is unaffected. Current settings are ISO800, AV. Any ideas what I've done ?

I'm assuming that the camera has not selected a shutter speed of 1 sec as the correct exposure time based on your aperture, available light and ISO speed?

What is the shutter speed recorded in the EXIF data?

Quiet mode selected by the sound of it.
Change it in the menu somewhere.

Look at the release mode dial.
Is it at "Q".
If it is then that explains what you are hearing.

You haven't knocked mirror lock up on by accident have you? I'm not a nikon guy but I think it's on the little dial on the top left of the d300 labelled as "Mup".

Edit- ignore me, I didn't realise the settings mentioned above were on the same dial :bonk: I did warn you I wasn't nikon savvy

There is a setting in the custom settings called 'Mirror lock up mode' or something like that.

It causes the mirror to go up about 1 second before the shutter goes, to reduce vibes for uber macro etc.

You have set it by accident.

My D200 sometimes, and quite rarely now, gets stuck on some shutter mode settings - so I'll be using Single fire, change to ConstantHigh and it will still be on single... maybe you have the same thing?
