Went to my boys school sports day yesterday, all parents there taking photos with compacts, mobiles and camcorders, I turned up with a gripped oly e3 with 50 - 200 on a mono pod and guess what? The head ask me to stop taking phots, I ask about every one else and he could not answer me.
So got my compact out and the head said OK

I have never had a problem at any of my girls sports days, quiet often shoot 2 bodies, I do offer any of the pics to the school for their newsletters and such, and have even been asked by the head to take photos for them.

I'd have told him to **** off, but then dipomacy was never my strong point...

lol if i ever get roped in - I'll set my sister the governor on them :p

I spose a 1d and 70-200 with a 5d and prime slung aren't 'that' subtle :p

Yea, 2nd word is 'Off'. He can't do that and had no right to. I would have said tough.

Was there an official tog there?

If so my hunch would be that it was to stop any freebie competition for them.

So write to the school, local education department, your local paper and copy the lot to your MP and ask for a reasonable explanation as to why.

I attended my sons first school assembly yesterday and toyed with the idea of taking my SLR but didn't for just this reason. There were loads of parents snapping away and recording.

Now of course I wish I'd had a word with the school first as it would have been great to have some nice pictures of the event.

If I'd been in your situation I think I would have had to stand my ground, firmly but politely pointing out the ridiculousness's (?) of the situation.

There have been a few threads on here from photographer/parents who challenged ridiculous ill thought out rules like this and obtained clarification that was understood by he school and education authorities.

Either you're allowed to take photo's or you aren't.

What you're using to take the photo's should not matter, you're there as a parent and like the others are documenting your childs sports day. I think the head needs some education to get over his irrational fear of SLR's.

The head must have thought the DSLR has some super power that can see the kids in a different way a compact can, my kids have their sports day and a school play in the next couple of weeks, I AM taking my new toy. In all honesty the school is great at letting people taking photos or videos of events. (providing that their kids go there) DOH!

I was asked to stop taking photos in Rochester Cathedral last week because there was some primary school festival going on, yet others with compacts were allowed to carry on.

Telling them that the priests should be a greater concern to the safety of the children, rather than any photographer did not go down well. Fortunately i already had the shots i wanted.

The worlds gone mad.:cuckoo:

I'm with everybody else here.

I'd refrain from any type of rude language though, just very politely point out everybody else is taking photos, so unless they're told to stop too you'll be continuing.

And the head will NOT want to be telling the parents nobody is allowed pictures!

Head can do what ever he likes it's private property and he is in charge, the rules are silly but they are valid.

I'm sure it was posted on here, some guidelines about shooting in school that stated that the school couldn't refuse people taking photographs of their children for personal use. Of course, I've searched for it and can't find it now...:bang:

Write to the chairman of governor's, they are usualy the best first point of contact if you have an issue with the behaviour of a school's head teacher.

I always get asked to stop taking photos on nights out when I decide to take my DSLR with me. I think they just assume I'm a business or something as it's not a point and shoot.

David are you the same David I know through Oy's site??

I'd have told him to **** off, but then dipomacy was never my strong point...

You're obviously more diplomatic that me. My response would have been a 200mm + D300 over the side of his head... and with confidence, great build quality in those Nikons you know

The head had no right to stop you individually but it's understandable if he/she had no knowledge of SLRs apart from paparazzi. I'm pretty shocked (and this is coming from a yoof) with the language most would use against what was a simple (though wrong) request. Do remember, it is still a childrens sports day.

Obviously this is the internet though and so most, I would hope, would be more rational and respectful than they claim they would be.

I think some speak slightly in jest... the exact wording might be substituted to suit the possible audience inadvertantly subjected to the abuse...

Haha, I think you may only be speaking for yourself there karmagarda ;). I've learnt not to take things too literally on this board but you never know with this lot.

I think i would have said that if he was only going to stop me taking pictures & not everyone else, he is in fact accusing me of being some kind of pervert & i will be seeking legal advice.

That seems to be the interpretation here, doesn't it?

I doubt it's because you'd possibly undercut some non-existent Pro also present at the performance - the implication is that as someone with better-than-average photographic kit, you're 'up to no good' and therefore I'd be tempted to explain my position with the use of some well-chosen epithets, punctuated by a swift thud in the cobblers*...

*(other forms of redress are available from retail outlets near you...)

OK Reality check required here rather than what we think we might or can do!

The head teacher could tell you as an individual or anyone else or all of the people taking photos to stop taking them!

Why the head asked you to stop taking photos using an slr is very odd and should be investigated by a polite conversation with him either in person or via mail.

The facts on what a School can and cannot do:
Based on the policy in force by a local Council a School via it's governing body can choose to ban or not anyone taking photographs.

If it had been me, I would have tried to reason with the Head and if that did not work I would have pointed out very politely that I was going to take it further. This will potentially cause a headache for the Head and he may have relented and let you use the slr once you explained it is after all just a camera.

But I would have also spoken to the school before the event and confirmed they had no issues.

I should point out that I used to be a school governor, but accept that the law may have changed in recent months. However, I very much doubt it.

Hope that helps clear up the matter.

Best regards

Chris

So this polite conversation to discuss the reasons he stopped you should take place after everyone has seen you be the only one to be stopped & has made their own mind up as to the reasons why?

no problems taking photos at my sons school (its positively encouraged) but the head calls me Mr which ****es me no end :@
