Is it my computer my connection speed is there sommething i have to do to improve my downloading of video/movie,it buffers then plays for about 5 seconds then buffers again, would clearing my browsing ; cache/history help any,or do i make a phone call to either BT or, Orange who's BB it is and hear what BS they have to tell me :bang:
 
I have broadband on orange too and at peak times it's rubbish. Might as well not bother some times. I can't use my ps3 online 50% of the time and the iPlayer can only be used after 8pm.

Orange tell me that It's just the way it is and there's no fault. To be honest I'm now bored of calling their call centre in India.

I bought a BT Accelerator which is an adaptor which fits into your main phone socket in your house and filters the Internet signal to make it faster. It's only about £8, well worth a go if you don't already have one. Does help a bit.
 
Change to be broadband. No traffic shaping at peak times. It will also be faster than orange

thatll be it then..

ping is basically bouncing a small packet of data off of a server, in this case its used to measure a response time. higher = slower.

when you signed up for your broadband did your provider give you a rough idea of the speed you could expect?

its that long ago i can't remember,prity dire eh?.. Any ideas ,i need to find out where my exchange is. Is there anything BT can do ,i've heard things like enhancing a telephone line ,mean anything to ya :shrug:

Ouch that does not look good!

Ping should be about 15ms if you have selected "no interleave" or about 30ms if you are using "interleave".

There is something VERY wrong if you have 174ms and the ISP should investigate what is wrong.

What is your sync speed?

BT wont do a thing, as its not their internet connection. you need to go through your ISP as its their responsibility as they "buy" it from BT.

you could try a few things like replacing your microfilters in your phone sockets, plug your router direct into your main phone socket with no extensions if you use any, move anything like power transformers, fridges, microwaves etc away from the router..
 
There is ADSL and ADSL2+

Most broadband is ADSL and at my house on ADSL I got 1.5Mbps
I changed to Be which is ADSL2+ (sky and o2 also are) and I got 6Mbps

I now have BT Infinity (fibre optic) which I get around 30Mbps on down and 7Mbps up

That sam knows link will tell you the speed you can get on ADSL (type your phone number in and on the next page click on ADSL). ADSL2 will be faster than this.
 
Have double checked speeds and their more or less the same ,whys the ping so high then compared to the rest
 
peak time usage could cause a high ping, basically you share a connection at the telephone exchange with X other people (i dont know oranges current policy on that)

is it a livebox? its been a while since ive seen those but can you log in to it and if i remember rightly theres a status page with signal to noise and attenuation?
 
It should never be over 100ms unless something is going on.

ADSL2+ needs a good quality line to sync higher the 8128, which is the highest sync for "standard" ADSL.

If you are not getting 8128 on standard ADSL the there is not much chance of getting a higher sync with ADSL2+
 
a hundred and one things can cause a high ping, that alone isnt really a good indication to single out a fault with the internet connection.

ideally we need to know the SNR and attenuation so try and work out if the line is a little flakey.
 
ADSL2+ will always sync higher than ADSL

I've had 4 lines changed over which proves this.

2 have been around 1 - 2 on ADSL and are now on 7Mb on ADSL2+

The other 2 were on around 3 -4 and are also now on around 8Mb on ADSL2+

Upload speed was also improved, to over 1Mb compared to 512k

So whatever speed you get on ADSL, ADSL2+ will be faster by quite a bit

Ok first thing, unplug all extensions.
If you have a faceplate that looks like this:

unscrew the bottom section and remove it. Underneath is the test socket, plug in to this.
Now do another speed test. If you have another microfilter swap that in and try that.

If speeds significantly improve you need to look at the wiring in the house.
If speeds don't then contact your ISP - even with peak traffic a connection shouldn't be that slow nowadays, could be a line fault.

If you don't get anywhere switch ISP.

Our cable and plugs are probably nigh on 20yrs old ,they come off in one piece
 
I noticed on another thread you are going to renew your filters.

Why not try disconnecting all your phones and filters then reconect your modem only without a filter.

Do your speedtest again and see if it's OK.

At least that will show if your filter/s are kaput.

Firstly, G.DMT is the original ADSL which has a lower throughput than ADSL2 or ADSL2+ (which is what mine is). Also, your margin is quite high at 15dB - as you can see from below, mine is 6dB and is fairly stable.

Have you tried rebooting your router and then seeing what the speed is? Mine needs regular rebooting as every few days it resyncs at about half speed (fortunately, I use a program called RouterStats which monitors the speed and reboots the router automatically if it sees a drop in speed).

My stats:

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,057 / 4,258
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 55.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 6.5

Be There run 3, 6 and 9dB profiles. Their 9dB profile is their "safe" one. Their standard is 6dB. I'm guessing they have a good idea of what they're doing ;)

That'll be ADSL not ADSL2+ Neil ;) Nost ISPs target 6dB.

The OP is syncing on G.DMT which is ADSL. I'd be asking the ISP why it is on ADSL1 and not ADSL2+. At 51dB, I'd be expecting something like 5-6Mbits/sec (I'm at 55 and get over 4 - it does resync every couple of days and drops to 2.xMbit, but my auto reboot program gets it back up).

The question is why is the OP on ADSL and not 2+ (I thought everything was 2+ now...)

depends how old the contract is i guess..

until recently we still had old 512 adsl in our warehouse, which was never upgraded as the ISP wont automatically do it and we forgot it was there.. it also cost us more a month than a new 8mb :lol:

Shouldn't orange have offered me the ADSL2+ option seeing as we've been with them for about 7yrs now ....

Methinks it's time to move ,whats peoples views on Talk Talk BB are their deals for real (off topic i know)
