wide angle for Canon 350D

Hi everyone, can someone please help a very confused novice.
I am looking to buy a wide angle lens from ebay for my canon 350d and the models i am looking at are:
Sigma 10-20mm EX DC

Canon EF 28 mm F/1.8 Lens

Firstly are they both the right fittings for my camera and also which would be the better one to try and bid on.

Hi,

Your camera is APS-C which is a crop format. What this means is that you have to multipy the lens focal length by 1.6 to get the field of view that your camera will give.

28mm is a reasonably wide angle on a 35mm full frame camera but on your camera it will be 28 x 1.6 = 44.8mm which isn't that wide at all, in fact it's more of a "standard" field of view.

For wide angle you really need to look at something wider than... maybe... 20mm. A 17-50mm will be reasonably wide and a 10-20mm will be even wider.

PS. Yes, they'll both fit your camera assuming that the Sigma is Canon fit.
 
As woof woof says, the 28mm on your camera won't be very wide. As for the Sigma, I have one and my wife now uses it on her 450D. It is a really great lens. I loved it before I went full frame. It is small light, enormous fun and gives you some really great wide-angle capability. Definitely would recommend it
 
Thank you both of you, i had thought the Sigma looked the better one, but wasn't sure why!! I really am a novice. All I have to do now is win the bid.

Can't ever imagine being able to show off my pictures!! Doing a year long photography course so maybe in 12 months i might know what i am doing! Assignment this week is interiors. Got some ideas but not sure if I can pull it off. We shall see! At the end of the day I am enjoying it and if I learn anything along the way then it must be a a bonus. Tina
 
Don't worry, the 10-20 works well on the 350d; it was one of the first lenses that I bought. Wide angles give the opportunity for some interesting shots in potentially mundane situations. Interiors are a great place for the 10-20.

I've one and am very happy with the results I get (some examples in my flickr account below)
 
The Sigma 10-20 that you linked to above is a 4/3 mount and will not fit the 350D - as woof woof said - you'll need the Canon fit - like this one.

I used to have a 350D and I still have the Sigma 10-20mm - imo, a very capable combination and certainly wide.

Take a look at http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=350D 10-20 for some idea of the results that the combination can give.

NOTE: - I just took a look at some of the pictures from the flickr link above - not all of them are with the 350D/10-20mm - best check the details for each photo you look at to make sure.
