Ok loved my Sigma 10-20mm on Sony but now that I have moved to Canon I am looking to get a wide angle lens but just read the Canon 10-22mm cant be used on full frame camera is that right? So whats the option to go for then? :confused:
 
I don't think that you can get wider than the Siggy 12-24mm. Great lens.

I read that there's a new version comming but don't know any other details.
 
If you fancy an excellent prime then the Zeiss 21mm is an amazing lens. Alternatively theres the Voigtlander 20mm but I dont have any experience with that. Both will be much sharper to the edges wide open than either the 17-40 or 16-35.
 
In order of rising cost (without going into things like Nikkor lenses on adapters):
Samyang 14mm Manual aperture/focus
Sigma 12-24 (second hand)
Canon 17-40L
Canon 16-35L II

Anything less than 16mm is going to be wider than your 10-20... 12mm on FF is www---iii---ddd---eee.
 
I haven't actually used the 17-40, but I've used a Tamron 17mm on my 5D and I'd think you wouldn't want to go much wider than that unless you have a very specific use for it. One step forward or back makes a huge difference at 17mm!
 
16-35mm - either mark 1 or mark 2...

I use a mark 1 on a 5d2 and am very happy with it..

In stepping forward or back you don't get the perspective effect that you get by going wider as (quite obviously) when walking about your lens is exactly the same length as it was before you did it :)

The 12-24mm really has to be seen to be believed.

:agree: (makes a change not to be arguing eh Alan ;) :D).

Have to say 12mm is just tops for any architecture work. Even with my limited use, I think it is too wide for landscape as everything becomes too small as it has a 122deg FoV. It is great for getting those "OMG, how did you get that photo" look, but isn't ideal (IMHO) as a GP landscape lens. I know it zooms, but it just doesn't seem to have the pop I'd like. I'm augmenting mine with a 17-40L (and will sell it on if it doesn't have anything to offer above my 12-24). I've also been considering replacing it with a Samyang 14mm manual focus, but am totally undecided on that one yet...
 
After using the 12-24mm on my real RAW :) camera I'm really tempted to buy a full frame DSLR but sadly Canon don't yet make one that meets my needs. I'm actually thinking of ditching all my Canon gear and switching to Nikon just to use this lens on a digital full frame body.
 
Gel, at the end that goes into the camera.

Although there is the argument that any filter at this width is going to create more problems than it solves.
