Yes
At the moment the widest I have is the 24-70, and sadly funds wont permit the 14-24, so I need something cheapish but wider than 24mm, prime or otherwise.

My aim is to use it for interior shots of buildings, much like the shots Kennysarmy posted here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=290712. (I live in the same city, so will be taking inspiration from his shots of the Catherdral)

He used a 10-20mm on a crop cam, so Im guessing Ill be looking at 14mm upwards to get a similar result.

So any reccomendations welcomed!

Wont be buying yet, but in a couple of months probably.

The 18-35 is pretty cheap, and there's the 17-35 and 16-35 too, I think to get much wider it's going to be quite expensive for full frame.

^^ Yup. Ultra wides for FX are the 14-24 and the 14mm prime. Zeiss do an 18mm lens as well, but it's MF only. Will be better optically than the above though I would imagine.

As said, the 18-35 is cheap and pretty good. After that comes the 16-35.

The 18-35 looks like it might do the job. I'd love the 14-24, but it aint gonna happen without selling a few body parts.
Cheers

You better start selling body parts, i think? Just had a little mess about with my 14-24, and love it already! Nothing worth posting up, yet, as the weather's poop at the moment, but i will be once this grey, damp weather breaks.

18-35mm is cheap, light and effective. Highly recommended on the d700, love mine.

17-35/2.8 is the only other w/a fx nikkor zoom that has a fixed f/2.8 across the range.

If I was used to a pro 2.8 zoom I would find it very hard to drop back to some of the cheaper glass suggested above.

They do a 14/2.8 prime which might be an idea but these are not cheap.

Good point, but I just cant afford any of the "pro" glass at the moment.

I have a specific set of shots in mind, and all of them will be at f/8 or above, so there isnt much use in f/2.8 thoughout, although it would be nice.

Even the 17-35 is waay past any money I have at the moment, so Ill have to settle for something less. Ive used loads of lenses from bottom of the range, to top of the range, so I know what they all handle like.

As long as the 18-35 can get the shots, then it will do just fine until funds allow the 14-24.

I'd consider the Sigma 15-30mm as well, same field of view as the 10-20mm on DX and cheaper than the 18-35 too. Think there's one in the classifieds here now for under £200.

If your budget allows you get the 16-35 f/4. If it's just outside your budget bite the bullet, if it's well outside your budget save a little longer. I think it would be worth it.

If you receive a windfall it has to be the Zeiss 21mm T* or 18mm.

Still way outside my budget. Im talking under £300 really.

Just spent £500 on 85mm 1.8 and another 24" monitor. I cant really spend anything more until I start work again in 3-6 months.
Unless the government suddendly whack sick pay up to £500 a week, Im pretty much stuck with a low budget. Ive already sold several things just to get the monitor and 85mm lens. Dont have anything left to sell.

I've a sigma 15-30 for sale in the classifieds, truly a bargain for an FX ultrawide.

Anyone tried the Tamron 17-35mm? It has a 77mm filter which would be usefull.

If your on a tight budget you could try a Tokina 12-24 mm its a crop lens but does work ok on the d700 in full frame from about 15mm you can use it wider you just don't get the corners. I used one on my d700 until I upgraded to the Nikon 14-24.

The 14-24 is expensive but it is in a complete league of its own when it comes to wides and was well worth the money.

I was wondering about a dx lens and turning the dx mode off and just using as wide as you can. Another to look in to, cheers.

I fully agree the 14-24 is the best, but if you can't afford it, then you can't afford it. My mortgage is more important than a lens. Until I win the lottery or get a massive pay rise, I've got to stick with some lower end glass.

I agree about the 16-35 f4. I had intended to splash out on the 14-24 f2.8 but after asking the same question on here I was pointed toward the 16-35 fx lens and I don,t regret buying it. Unlike the 14-24 it takes filters,(77mm) and the IQ is excellent. It also saved me £400.

Still £500 more than I have currently though. Its going to have to be a tokina, sigma, tamron or the nikon 18-35, as all the other Nikons are just too expensive at the moment sadly.

Sigma 12-24? If possible, try before you buy - some people have had dodgy ones. There's also a Cosina 19-35 which is suitable for FF (IIRC, the Vivitar of the same length is the same lens in a different box).

The sigma 12-24 is a possibility but its still quite pricey.

You people are good at spending my money!

I was hoping for under £200 really, but might have to rethink and find something else to sell!

When you buy quality 2.8 glass you are not really "spending" money as the glass will keep its value so well that you are really just "curating" the glass for a peppercorn rent as if you sell then you have not spent much hence "peppercorn".

Try telling the wife that..

"I havent bought this lens for £1000 darling, Im just the curator until the next person comes along"

Dont think that'll work. And I dont have £1000 in my bank to start with.

I can't believe that I'm going to say this, given that I might be trying to sell my 18-35mm Nikkor soon, but I wouldn't actually recommend this lens for interior shots (your intended use) :(. It's very sharp in the centre and great value for money these days, but it's weakness is a fairly difficult to correct distortion profile (at certain focal lengths).

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This bridge is straight, but it looks here as though it's auditioning for a role as a pair of bicycle handlebars  ...

After two weeks of shooting with this lens, I put it away and saved up for the 17-35mm f/2.8 - I haven't used the 18-35mm since, except on my film cameras . Still, for other kinds of (non-structural) shots, it's very good at what it does and can even be used on old manual SLRs, thanks to the aperture ring.

I hope that my comments help you to buy, as they certainly aren't going to help me to sell .

Interesting, thanks. Do you think they are all like that or just you have a bad copy?

Im really torn still. The sigma 15-30 looks really good for what I want, except you cant use filters on it. The Nikon 18-35, has the 77mm filter thread I want, but isnt all that wide (compared to the other options), costs more and as you have demonstrated appears to have pretty major distortion.

The other options are either to expensive or have a 82mm thread.

Im thinking I should just hire the 14-24 for the day and have done with it.

the cheapest wide angle is a 28mm then a 24mm f2.8 i would rather have any of these than a zoom especialy if it wasnt nikon

Ive already got the 24-70 f/2.8 and its not really that wide.

24mm was allways regarded as a wide, wide in film days :) [i wish i hadnt sold mine now]

i use a 20mm f2.8 and its superb i dont feel the need for anything wider as it wouldnt be used that much.have you seen the size of these primes?so much easier to carry around,so i do.

Yeah, I was considering something like a 20mm prime, but Im not sure. The thought of ultra wide appeals for the shots I have in mind.
Ideally I need to go shoot the shots with the 24mm and see if I even need wider, but cant get out for another 2-3 weeks.

MPB have got one for £429. 12mm is incredibly wide on FX!

That's about what I paid for mine NEW a few years ago and yes, 12mm on FF is almost insanely wide - keep checking the bottom edge of the frame for toes and/or belly!

I nearly walked off the top of Hen Cloud when I had the 10-20mm on my D300s last year, it made the edge look a lot further away than the matter of inches it was! I can only imagine how dangerous the 12-24 on FX could be

I understand why you are looking for a cheap wide angle lens, but i really am struggling to see what is the point! I mean, hundreds of people on here are always looking to improve their camera / lenses, or both, and how many times have i read that its better to buy decent lenses first, before upgrading the body? A pro lens on a lower spec camera is far far better than a pro spec body with a budget lens. If you are looking for a lens to do some paid work, why not hire one? otherwise i can't see what you are gaining from using lesser quality lenses on such an awesome camera body? If you was local to me, i'd have lent you my lens to help you out.

Ive spent around £3k in the last 2 months to get what I have currently. I simply dont have any money left, especially as Im on £70 a week sick pay for the next 3-6 months.
Im not doing paid work, its simply a hobby and something I enjoy. I'd love nothing more than to spend £1200 on the 14-24, but I cant, so I have to live with what I can afford.
All my other lenses are "pro", so having one that is slightly lesser quality isnt going to hurt to much.

Please don't be offended by what i have written. it wasn't meant to be offensive.:(

It's just that there are now 2 threads on this forum asking about cheap WA lenses for use with a D700

Oh, and i forgot, hope you recover real soon from your surgery.

Dont worry, not offended. I have a very strong backbone!
Like I said, Id love to get the best, but I just cant afford to right now, so Ive got to settle for what I can afford, even if its not top dog. I would wait until I could afford to, but once Im able to walk and drive again, Im going to have a lot of time before going back to work with nothing to do and I want to concentrate on photography as much as I can. I really want to get some pictures of the Cathedral, much like Ive linked to in my original post and also of some other local places that I really should have done before when I was fit and able to.

I saw the other threads too, I was first though :D
