Wide Angle for d800

Hi folks

My usual fare is portraits with the odd bit of macro when I fancy a bit of variety. I'd like to try some landscape photography so will be getting a red snapper tripod but fancy a wide lens for the d800

Don't want to spend a fortune (200 ish) so what cheap wide angles with reasonable IQ can you recommend?

Hi, I've got a samyang 85 f1.4 which is one of my fave lenses.

Do you have any examples and how bad is the distortion?

Silly wide and possibly over budget, a Sigma 12-24, although you might find a second hand one. There's a Cosina 19-35 but that distorts quite a bit - cheap though! Older Sigma or Tampon 24-70?
 
Hi, You don't say how wide you you want to go, but if it's of any help I use a 20mm F3.5 AI Nikkor (manual focus) on my D800 with superb results. They can be picked up at very reasonable prices.

Maybe a Tokina 17-35mm f/4 used can be picked up for around £250, or safe some cash up and get a used Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 which will be better on such a good camera instead of some cheap lens
 
Ignoring the jibes about expensive camera - cheap lens, the Tamron 17-35mm is pretty good optically and within budget. Fact is that FF sensors are less demanding on lenses (except the corners) than croppers.

This. The Tamron 17-35 is way better than you'd expect for the price (under £200 s/h) and is the king of budget wide angles for FF. To get any better (and not by a lot) you'd need to spend another few hundred pounds. Great companion to the Tamron 28-75 actually, another big performer for £200.

I'd avoid the Nikon 17-35, it's an old lens from the film days that doesn't really do it on digital, it looks very flat and lifeless compared to the modern stuff. I was very disappointed when I got one after spending months tracking down one that didn't have a squeaking AF motor. The Tamron 17-35 I got after for a quarter of the price was much better. Not as big, heavy and impressive looking, but optically it's the business.

I have expensive lenses and cheap lenses. I mainly shoot portraits.

I want to try landscapes over a short period of time but long enough to not want to perpetually rent a lens.

Not quite sure why I should have to explain this. Yes if money was no object, I wouldn't be starting this thread and would be off buying a nikkor 16-35 or 14-28.

And using your analogy, if that fiat drives fast and gets results, then I'm happy. If I decide to continue to want to drive fast, then I might upgrade the 15 year old fiat. If not, I've had some fun and not wasted a lot of money I don't have.

I've got a (non bleeding) 28-70 tampon tamron but fancied a cheap wider lens

I've read about the cosina but not seen any real world results.....might be a step too far!

Cheers, I'm a big fan of tamron lenses so will definitely have a scout around (28-75 is possibly my most used lens)

Why not plan an outing or two and hire a lens for the occasion and see if you like landscape shooting? The danger will be liking it of course because that ends up with new lenses and square filter systems! ;)

I have semi planned an outing or three but not on sequential days......which is why it makes more financial sense to get a decent cheaper lens than to have three lots of hiring costs!

But of course did look at renting!

Or you could just use the 28-75 and stitch 2 or 3 shots together.

Save you some money until you see whether you like landscape stuff or not.

PS....another Tamron 28-75 lover here.

Oh well, good luck on the hunt!

The book made up from the piccies etc caused much joy and tears. My photos may end up with a few on FB, if they are not all dreadful!

Dunno pal, I use CS6, i`m sure there are free stitching programmes out there, could be worth a google or a search on here.
 
Buy the Samyang used. For the price even if you don't like it you can sell it on and not lose anything. I've got the Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 on the D800 and still bought the Samyang. The distortion can be dealt with in Lightroom and plus it is a fun and interesting lens to use.

Must confess to loving my 85 mm samyang, it is also a blast to use so definitely one to consider!
 
I have a Sigma 20mm F/1.8 which is excellent, and can be had for around what you want to spend.

If you ask Yv very nicely, she might (if she's not too busy!) post a snap or 2 from the Cosina 19-35 - she's got mine on loan at the moment.
 
Shaheed, take a look at the Microsoft `ICE` prog. Free download & just about the quickest & easiest stitching prog I've tried.

Although last time I borrowed a lens from you I was several hundred pounds lighter in the wallet as I then purchased one!

Planning a trip out with buck (bought your old monitor screen) early December.

Am about to buy a red snapper tripod (I sent you a message about the one you had and whether you'd recommend it?!)
