Wide angle help

I have £1000 to spend.

I am going to New York (taking the misses cChristmas shopping).

So I have always wanted a wide angle, dont know if it will get value for money usage (thats not the point).

I am down to 3 choices
1. Nikon 14-24 f2.8
2. Sigma 10-20mm f3.5
3. Tokina 116 f2.8

My other choice is do I buy before I fly?

Its the d300s,

I like the look of the tokina, but the sigma seems to be getting some good write ups.
 
Every mm makes a difference at the wide end so there'll be a noticeable difference between the 10mm of the Sigma and the 14mm of the Nikon. That could influence your decision.
 
Just been reading kens comparison of wide angles.

Think I may get the Tokina 116
 
Another vouch for the Tokina 11-16mm. Wonderfully sharp lens, even at f2.8 throughout the range. There can be a bit of CA in extreme conditions at f2.8 at 11mm however that's easily solved through LR.
 
Since it's the D300s don't bother getting the 14-24. It's designed to cover a full frame image circle and so wouldn't be as wide on the D300s as either of the other two lenses. It's also very expensive, and it's a lot of money to "waste" parts of the lens that you will simply never see on a crop sensor camera.

Go for one of the other two, and then spend the rest of the money on holiday ;)

Its only expensive if you cant afford it.

I was going to get a new powerbook, but have decided to invest in the glass.

Will the glass I buy now benifit me in years to come.
Ie
Is this the end of FX cameras with the tech being introduced.
 
I have owned the Tokina and now own the Nikon. Out of your selection the Nikon 14-24 is by far the best. The corner to corner sharpness is streets ahead of anything else. Have a look at this 14-24 un-croped image and see the sharpness and detail in the corners. The other 2 don't get close. Yes it is very expensive but its worth every penny.

Also if you ever want to go full frame you won't have to change lens.

I should also say that the Nikon has one of the lowest levels of CA that I have seen. The CA from the Tokina will make you go:runaway:

Imo...

Nikon 12-24 (DX version) if you a) have the money and b) don't mind lugging it about - Probably best in class for image quality.

Tokky 116 for high end DX wide angle shots with little distortion - Probably best in class for distortion control.

Tokky 12-24 DX if you want the above with more zoom - Probably best bang for buck out of the three.

I had the 116 and loved it at 11mm but sold it as I found the angle just a little to limiting and didn't like have a £350 lens just sitting in my bag, I don't have that kind of money. I kinda wished I'd bought the Tokky 12-24 instead but I ended up moving to FX anyway so picked up the Nikon 18-35 which does me proud and is half the price of same POV on DX (albeit with heinous distortion at the low end).

Swings and roundabouts lol!
