there doesn't seem to be that many to choose from
canon 16-35 very expensive
canon 17-40 only f4
sigma 12-24 seems to be good and bad reviews about it and gel filters
tamron all seem to be DI II lenses for 1.6 crop cameras
tokina not sure which are crop and which are full frame
 
What's wrong with f4 for an ultrawideangle? Not the kind of ens that needs 2.8 or bigger is it? The 17-40 is a cracking ens on a 1D of any description...

I use a 17-40 on mine but it tends to be when I'm shooting landscapes.

It's nice and sharp and to be honest I rarely go anywhere near f4 yet alone need faster.
 
yes i have been thinking of getting the 17-40 for a while now but when you are spending £500 you want to be sure you are choosing the right lens.
in regards to it being f4,sometimes you may want to shoot indoors like churches,museums etc and would prefer 2.8.
 
I have the 12-24 - amazing lens for ultra ultra wide angles. I've just got a 17-40 on order as I think it will be sharper and have better colour rendition. If so, I'll end up with 17mm for landscapes and keep the 12mm Siggy for architecture. 12mm on FF for landscapes really is just too wide IMHO...

Will be interesting to see what the reviews of the new 12-24 Siggy are like.....
 
At ISO800 if you can handhold at 1/20th then you should be good for lots of indoor shooting at f4, other option is 20 or 24 2.8 prime for under £300 secondhand...
 
I got some good results with the 17-40 on my 1D.
 
"f/4 only" is not a problem if it is pin sharp at f/4. I still use Tokina 12-24mm f/4 back from aps-c days, and it is incredibly good from 15mm onwards. I doubt canon 17-40 or sigma would give the same sharpness wide open (f/8-11-16 seem more reasonable with these).
 
i have amazing results with the 17 - 40 for landscape

only drawback is when you want to use it when the light is low.
i take landscape and also graffs. end of the day when the light is very low, it is hard to get a nice picture without tripod or high iso out of the F4. But still, for the price and quality during the day im very pleased
 
The 16-35 is a nice lens. Have you had a look on eBay? They can be had for under £500 which is terms of quality for your money is pretty dam good.
