Wide angle lens on 1D MK IIn

Hi all,

I'm looking to add a wide angle lens to my collection that will be used for landscape and interior shots. Nothing specific as photography is simply a hobby of mine. However, looking at the various (wide angle) lens there seems to be some overlap and without doing a thorough search I thought I'd ask what would be the best lens for this type (1.3 crop) of camera. It may be that in future I would add a FF camera to my collection as I previously owned a 5D but would probably be looking at a 1DS at some point.

Also should I also be considering makes other than Canon, however I would say that price isn't a major issue (unless its over 2k).

Any advice as always would be most gratefully appreciated, thanks. :)

Give the Sigma 12-24 a try. Some people have found that there are problems with QC, giving softness in parts of the image but I've had no such problem with mine. I think it's the only super wide angle suitable for use on FF Canon bodies, although Nikon users can go for the 14-24 if they can afford it!
 
I use the Canon EF 24-70 F2.8L lens on my ID Mk IIN and have always been impressed with sharpness and image quality, if that helps.
 
ditto the siggy 12-24mm I use mine on a 1DS MKII-and it's good.
 
Thanks for all the responses; Barry - the 24-70mm is definitely one of the lens I'm looking for but not for wide angle as as I'm looking for something in the 10+ range.

17-35 is a possible contender but the 12-24mm definitely sounds interesting - especially considering some of the shots I've saw from Les. :D

Rick - thanks for the good info about the 10-20mm Sigma. This was one lens I was considering and it would be unlikely (for that lens) that I could try before I buy!
 
I used the 17-40 with mine (when I had it.......wish I didn`t sell it now :() and I was pleased with the image quality it produced.
 
Thanks, there seems to be a lot of reports/reviews indicating that the 12-24mm Sigma suffers from 'soft spots'. It's a pity that the 10-22mm canon is an EF-S mount otherwise that would be another contender.
 
Searching the net seems to suggest that the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 could be a good contender and its relatively cheap.

Does anyone know if this lens if an EF-S or EF mount please?

Canon 17-40mm F4 i just love mine would give you about 22mm on 1d mk11just for the record a friend of mine was so impressed after trying mine he sold his 16-35mm 2.8 and bought one

Another very good Canon ultra-wide angle zoom lens is the Canon EF 17-40 f4 L Lens. Costing far less money, the 17-40 L rivals the image quality of the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens. It is a great value and I frequently recommend it. The biggest difference between these two lenses is the complete stop aperture advantage the 16-35 L II has - It can stop motion (subject or camera) in 1/2 the light required by the 17-40 to do the same. The f/2.8 aperture makes the 16-35 L II a much better low light/indoor available light lens.

I would go for a 17-40 or a 16-35 if thats going to be wide enough for you and they are weather sealed.
 
Canon 16-35 is the beast you want.
 
Another vote for the 17-40. Used one for a year with my old 1D and got some great shots with it. When I went FF, I swapped it for a 24-105, but that's another story.
 
I would go with the previously mentioned Siggy 12-24 excellent little lens – if you want something a little different have a look is the EF 15mm fisheye – slightly clunky old AF, but gives a great image in a small package. 17-40 is not so great on the 1.3 as it becomes a not quite so inspiring 22mm - but agree it is a nice lens on FF

Thanks for all the great suggestions - well from that picture the 12-24mm is definitely back in the running! :D

However, reading through TP it seems that people have to go through about 2 (and more) Sigma lens to get one that is acceptable. I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of repeatedly sending back a lens until its right. Seems to be odd that there is a high variance on manufacturing quality for this lens.

I was very worried about that when I bought mine – it is why I paid slightly more and went through a local shop for “peace of mind” but in the end there were no worries – to be honest it was far better quality than my 17-40 which needed correcting at 17mm due to curved horizons and the Siggy was far less prone to flare – possibly easiest thing is to try and hire each of the contenders and see how you get on – the 15mm is a stunner as well and worth a look.

Thanks, I think plan of attack will be to try the 12-24mm. IIRC Jessops dont stock Sigma and in fact try and sell you anything other than Sigma. One person at the MC shop went as far to say that Tamron were buying out Sigma so it was all becoming discontinued stock (!) though he was immediately berated by a more senior member. :D

However there is a Jacobs in Newcastle so I may give them a call first to see if they can do some stock shifting so i can try it.
