Im after a nice wide angle lens for my 1000D but not to sure on what to get. I have a budget of about £300 could go a little higher.

I did have a few of the L series in mind but tbh i dont really want to go down the finance route.

Any help would be great

Not exactly wide angle though is it. I'd consider less than 16mm to be wide angle on a 1000D

That's probably more ultra-wide angle territory; I'd say 17-20mm is wide.

17-40mm is a great call - excellent lens and soooo well made.
 
Would recommend you try the Canon 10-22mm before deciding, you may be able to get a used example near £400 if you're lucky, or look at Sigma, Tamron equivalents.

On reflection, I read the OP's "nice wide angle" to read as "nice and wide" as opposed to a "nice, high quality, wide angle"

17-40 is a very nice lens, but you can probably get a more versatile APS-C one which gives just as good pictures for the same sort of price. You're paying for the ability to cover a full frame sensor with the 17-40.
 
Assuming you mean something starting around the 15-20mm as being wide-angle, and not an ultra-wide, I and many others would recommend the Tamron 17-50mm, which you can pick up used for just over £200.

I don't really see the appeal of getting a 17-40 on cropped sensor cameras, compared to the alternatives it's expensive, relatively slow, and has a more limited focal range. Yes it's got the advantage of weather sealing, but the 1000D doesn't, so water could still get in in the worst case.

Just my views though, obviously others feel differently :)
 
I see you have the kit lens listed in your camera bag. Do you find the 18mm wide enough or are you looking more at the ultra wide, lets say from 10mm apprx?
 
A little? hmmm could fall anywhere I guess lol. There are some options beginning at 15,16 and 17mm but as there might not be much difference with the field of view and also significant overlap with the kit lens, I'll mention the lenses I considered when hunting out a 'wide angle' on the crop format.

You probably want to look at the Sigma 10-20mm f4-f5.6. This is often the best 'budget' buy ultra wide angle lens and closer to your budget.

The top two are often the Tokina 11-16 and the Canon 10-22 and are usually the wrong side of £500. I think Tamron do a couple too but I discounted them based on the side by side reviews.


So there will be more choices than I listed, some with faster apertures, focus motors, weatherproofing, overall build quality and price. Good luck with your search.

What about the Sigma 10-20mm, I have read lots of good things about it, might be just over your budget.

Sorry mate - I came across as a cock. Not myself today and yes, you are paying for a FF lens with the 17-40mm, although it does have good optics but like the next fella said, there are more suitable lenses (like the Tamron) for less money :thumbs:

I've got the Sigma 10-20 F4-5.6 and would recomend it. It's an EX lens so it's about as good quality as Sigma get and you can buy it new for around £400.
