I am considering buying a wide angle lens I am just wondering how much of a improvement it would make over my 18-55mm kit lens for landscapes?
Any advice?

I agree entirely. I love my Canon 10-22, but generally not for landscapes. It's just too wide.... The popular choice is the Sigma 10-20 which works if you want wide open landscapes, but you have to remember that it will push things away from the camera, so that nice church on the horizon becomes an almost indistinguishable speck in the shot. I find for most landscape shots, my 18-70 is the better option over my 10-20. A wider angle works better for closer stuff like architecture, or 'nearby' landscape....for instance, a good wide view of the beach while you are actually on it.
