Wide angle on FX

The Sigma 12-24 works very well on a D700 as does the Nikkor 14-24 (according to those who are lucky/rich enough to afford one!). Good luck finding one under £450 though (unless you can travel in time and go back to when I bought mine for £440 or so - new).

Do you really want to go that wide? I really love wide angle lenses but 12mm on full frame is massively wide - not needed that often and quite hard to use when it is.

But most of all it seriously limits choice. Loads more options around 16/17mm, and you can fit filters to them.

If you can find a good copy the sigma 12-24 is fantastic for about that money.12mm is insanely wide on an fx body though

Just looking for options at the moment hence my post on here. I will see whats ok on an FX sensor then start doing my research into each one. At the moment my widest is a Sigma 24-70.

If you're used to 24mm, then a Nikon 16-35 will seem like a fish-eye. Great lens, and with VR too :) It's the obvious choice, and within budget used.

The 17-35 is probably the best 'normal' wide angle zoom but over budget even used, what about the 18-35mm Nikon?

your 24-70 will be a wide angle on a D700 equivalent to a 17mm on the d300

Cheers mate, im thinking of letting the Sigma 24-70 go and adding a bit to get something else. One option is the Nikon 24-70 but wanted to see what else was available before making my mind up.

To be honest mate, i might need the 2.8 but not sure at the moment. If all goes to plan i will have an 85 f1.8 for general portraits and pics of the family etc. I have been using the Sigma 24-70 on holiday as an all round lens for sunset pics and for taking pics of my family etc and a few times i used 2.8 and loved it but stepped down to around f16 etc for landscapes. I have heard the Nikon 12-24 is a bit sharper so either sell the Sigma and get a Nikon or keep the Sigma and get something dedicated for landscapes.

But that's the same as zoom range as a 16-36 on the D700, and you know you won't want to leave the D700 at home so why even consider the option?

Buy a wide zoom for your D300 and I guarantee you will immediately wish you had saved a little harder and bought a lens for the D700.
