Hi everyone,

I currently have a 16-85mm with my D300s but looking to get something wider for my street, landscape photography.
I was thinking about getting the sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6, but a friend of mine has a Tokina 12-24mm f4 AT-X Pro that he is looking to sell.
I havent seen the lens yet to try it myself.

I was wondering if 12mm to my 16mm will make a big difference worth buying this lens or shall I just get the sigma.
I can get the tokina for about £250, the sigma is around £375 new.

Advise please.
Thanks

I can't post any proof but I'd I'd say that it would. I think that even small differences at the wide end are much more noticeable than even larger differences at the long end. I have a Sigma 12-24mm and it's noticeably wider than my 17-50mm and it's also much better corrected too. I think that there's actually quite a difference between 10 and 12mm too.

I remember once viewing a website where you could see the effect of different widths on the same shot but unfortunately I can't remember where it was.

Perhaps someone else who may seen this site or who is better at Googling than me can post a link?

Wide is still wide on a DX sensor, it's just not as wide as it would be on an FX sensor.

A 10mm lens on a DX body has a the same equivalent FOV as a 15mm lens would on an FX body. 15mm is still pretty damn wide. :)

Personally I can't praise my Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 enough, and at the 10mm end gives you a field of view slightly wider than 90 degrees, so very handy if you've got your back in a corner of a room and want to show the entire surroundings, or if you're shooting something on a corner that goes off in right angles. A 12mm wide end on a lens doesn't quite reach 90 degrees.

I posted on my blog about this after the last time I saw a question come up regarding the different fields of view on wide angle lenses with DX bodies.

Basically though, compared to 16mm, you will notice a huge difference with either 12mm or 10mm.

Thank you very much everyone that's been very helpfull.

I had a look at your blog, thanks for that, after reading a bit more on them it seem to be that the sigma might be a better option.

Thanks again.

Tokina 11-16mm 2.8/f worth a consideration. Small FL range, but it is wide and a strong performer even when wide open.

All the reviews and comparisons I read, leading to my ultimate decision, said that the Sigma 10-20 was an overall better lens than the Nikon 10-24mm, but better control of distortions on the Sigma, but give it a try and see for yourself. :)

To be honest I dont want to spend more than £300 on it so I think the sigma will be a good option, all I need to do now is wait till a good 2nd hand one comes along.
