Wide angle zoom for Canon 1D MK2

Hi

Looking for a suitable wide angle zoom for the 1D MK2 (1.3 crop). The usual expectation would be to partner the body with the L series lenses. Whilst I have a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L in the pipeline for motorsport I quite fancy trying a bit of landscape photography too.

I never really intended to do landscapes but used to many years ago and it'll be more readily available than motorsport to just get out there and shoot again.

Subsequently I haven't budgeted for a wide angle zoom nor any other lens right now but seems my choice is really limited to Canon only glass ie. Canon 17-40mm f/4 L which was more than I was immediately looking to pay.

Any other branded lenses suitable for use with 1.3 crop? I believe the Tamron DI lenses won't work - is that correct?
 
L? Why not just buy the best whatever the badge?

There's a few 24-70's and there's always the lovely Sigma 12-24mm. If you want a cheapo but good there's a 19-35mm that's badged as several makes and seems to have a loyal following, I've seen good images taken with them, and there's Canon's own 20-35mm in various guises and moving up there's their 16-35, very nice, mucho money.

If you are looking for quality you could always think about primes and if you want the very best maybe look beyond Canon too.

PS. AFAIK Tamron Di are ok but DI ii are for APS-C.

Only reason I say L because I know its a good match for the body.

I'm not after maximum quality but compatibility with the 1D MK2. My number one reason for the buying the body wasn't its photo quality but that it was the only DSLR I could find in my price range that felt "right" in the hand. Everything else that did, the 60D and 7D, were at least twice the price I paid for the 1D.

However, returning to SLR photography after 20 years, I thought I understood the crop issues with DSLRs however appears the 1.3 crop causes further confusions or compatibility issues I hadn't been aware of.

I understood that so long as the lens were a Canon EF fit and that I took into account the increase in focal length every lens would be fine. However, and completely down to lack of education on my part, it seems lenses such as the Tamron DI II though an EF fit are not compatible with the 1D and this is something I had not appreciated.

Are the vignetting issues somewhat over talked in that whilst they might exist 99% of the population wouldn't even notice?

I know what you mean. The exact same thing happened to me when I went digital and I just couldn't understand why my 28mm lens didn't seem so wide anymore :lol:

I think that the vignetting issue could very depend upon the individual lens but at it's worst it is very obvious on full frame and would need a heavy crop to get rid of. On APS-H the problem would be less visible but how much so I suppose will be down to the individual lens design so it'd be better to either try before you buy or find someone with the exact same set up who can report exactly what happens.
 
The old sigma 15-30mm might be worth considering? It's the right kind of focal length for wide angle on a 1.3x sensor
 
This has been covered before. I found the 17-40L worked well with my 1D2 as a wide angle lens.
 
The sigma 15-30 is a nice lens in my opinion.
