Wide Angle Zoom with auto focus for Nikon DX

Not used the sigma 10-20 so cannot comment. Have used the Nikon 10-24 (albeit briefly) and also the Nikon 12-24 and if I were to pick one of the Nikons that would be the one I'd go for. I've also had a play with the tokina 11-16 f2.8 and that is also very nice indeed and definitely worth a thought. Tokina have brought out a new 11-20mm f2.8 which I haven't used but given they seem to do very well with UWAs I may be worth a punt.
 
Having recently plumped for the Tokina 11-20 I would highly recommend it, definitely exceeded my expectations.
 
I've had a sigma 10-20 for 3 years and can't fault it! It's for sale now ad I've gone fx! And love it

Ironically, I've been checking gumtree in my local area regularly for weeks, and now something interesting has shown up.

Sorry, can't help with that lens. It replaces the Tokina 12-24 f4 which was decent enough - they do seem to produce pretty good wide angle lenses though :)
 
The later and more expensive Sigma 8-16mm is not only a useful bit wider (it exceeds the magic 90 degree angle of view by enough that you can photograph all four walls of a room while standing inside it), but it is also sharper than either of the Sigma 10-20mm models.
 
But limited for landscapes ...... With grad filters anyway
 
I note you want an AF wide angle zoom. I have two wide angle zooms, plus a prime, plus some of more more general zooms get down into mildly WA focal lengths, 18mm & 16mm. I use them all as manual focus lenses because my cameras all have problems getting accurate AF with WA lenses.

The AF of my previous camera started going off the rails at around 22mm. The much improved AF of my current camera seems good to down about 14mm. I note from other forums that many users of wide angle lenses report similar unreliable wide angle AF problems. Manual focus with these lenses is not a problem, in fact, because they have such a huge depth of focus. Mostly it's just a case of learning the best hyperfocal setting and leaving it there.

No, not a Nikon user, but these wide angle AF problems aren't restricted to a specific make. Just a note of caution.

Soon after starting this thread I saw that Tokina 12-28 advertised, saw it last night, loved it and -for better or for worse- bought it (inc. a Hoya filter). She really does look mint, big, heavy and beautiful.

But keep this thread running ... interesting info for all. And I may even post some pics on here later.
