I have been wondering this a bit lately and have done a search and havent found much on here.

But what would you use as a ultra wide lens on a 1.3 crop.? And what about if you want a fisheye.?

Tyler

I would think anything wider than 17mm would be ultra wide

fish eye is the effect isnt it? not how wide the lens is but mos fisheye lenses are very wide the start with.

Assuming a 1.3 crop is a Canon 1D series, my choices would be a Canon 16-35 or a Sigma 12-24. Never felt the need for a fisheye, so can't comment on that.

Thats what i thought but it still wouldn't be as wide as 16mm on full frame or 100mm on a 1.6 crop. Guess thats as wide as you go

The 12-24 mm on 1.3x is equivalent to roughly 16-31mm on full frame (similar to the 10-22 on 1.6x crop).

You can't use EF-S lenses on a 1.3 or FF.

EDIT:- corrected see below.

I use a Tokina 11 - 16 f2.8 on my 1 D Mk4, only usable from about 12.5 to 16, but that'll do me.

10-12mm (cropped sensor) 16-18mm FF. For a 7D the Tokina 11-16mm is a nice option.

A fisheye lens will give a wider panoramic but you'd need good correction software like DxO Optics Pro to achieve the non distorted image via morphing but this can have some minor drawbacks due to interpolation.

Another option is by stitching images together using software like PTgui, though it's probably easier to do this when not using an UWA lens.

I have just got the 17-40 for my 1D, I find it plenty wide enough, depends what shot your after really

It's a shame that nobody makes dedicated lenses designed for 1.3x crop sensors, specifically an ultra wide 16-35mm equivalent. But I suppose they wouldn't be huge sellers and worth the investment to make them. I guess a majority of the 1D users use the big white teles for sports most of the time anyway.

Another vote for the 17-40mm on 1D, I was always happy with my results using that combination.

With regards to fisheye, you would need to use one of the fisheye zooms, the Canon 8-15mm is the expensive option, but the Tokina 10-17mm was the go to fish eye for 1D users before the new Canon one came out.
