First off, I have a 5DmkII and 17-40f4L. I know what the L-series lenses can deliver but they are out of budget....
My 16 year old cousin is a keen photographer and I have been impressed with her eye for composition. I have a 5D (original) as my backup camera and I decided for Christmas that I would permanently loan it to her.
Unfortunately I don't have a spare wideangle lens. I am looking for something in the 17-50 ish range. Are there any more affordable options out there?

I have an old Tokina 20-35mm (second version) which is useful and decent in the corners at 20mm, but I doubt it will have the range you are looking for.
