Right now I have your attention :naughty:

My misses wants a walk about lens to go with her 1000D as the 18-55is kit lens doesnt have the reach she wants.

We are looking at the Sigma 18-200mm (non OS version) and was wondering does any on have any experiance of this lens and how does it compare with the Tamron eqiv.

On a tight budget so it will be second hand, therefore please don't say get the OS version costing double, as thats not an option. I'm just looking to see if anyone has this lens and if it is any good or a complete turkey.

Second hand Tamron 18-250

I had one on my 350D for over 3 years and took many great photo's.

You should be able to pick one up cheap as chips in good nick now as it's been supersceded twice.
 
Can you afford the Canon 55-250mm? used go for about £120, great lens for the money.
 
I think she wants something thats covers a larger focal range, hence the 18-200mm and only wants to carry 1 lens, not the load of gear she has seen me carry!

I had thought about the 55-250mm and will speak to her about that one as well.

My friend has this lens in a Nikon version. I wasn't really impressed with it tbh when I had a play. I'd much rather be inclined to keep the kit lens and get a 55-250 as said above.

Agreed for that budget the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS is pretty hard to beat, if you had a larger budget I would say go for the Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 SP Di VC USD but thats a pretty significant jump.

I'll PM you a couple of image archives for both lenses so you can check out real world images.

I was just looking at The Sigma 50-200mm and wondered whether it was worth £100 (not that I can even afford this at the moment)

For ultimate flexibility, the Tamron 18-250 offers supurb range with reasonable IQ for not much money considering, if that's what she wants?
 
Thanks guys for all your input and advice. I will have a chat with "She who must be obeyed" and go from there.

I like the sound of the 55-250IS lens but I think she wants a one stop job to keep the weight down when out and about.

JohnN thanks for the PM it has given me food for thought.
 
You know my thoughts Doug - I'm so tempted with the 55-250is just need to offload the Tamron first :-)
 
i have the 18 - 200 sigma os version, it has its limitiations, but in good light its a cracking walkabout lens IMO

At that price Ive just ordered one (Sigma 50-200mm f4-5.6 DC OS HSM) :thumbs: For £100 cant go wrong, my mate John (eosjohn He paid £180 for his), has one and thinks its a good lens, If I dont like it I could probably sell it for more than I paid or at least break even

My new Sigma 50-200mm f4-5.6 DC OS HSM, came today, had a quick play with it looks and feels good, OS is great, fast AF, and its ultra quite, well happy, fab value for £100, I'll do some test shots and post them. Thanks for the link New2me, post #10, :thumbs:

I have the non-OS version and whilst I have to agree with lizzy23 where it's limitations are concerned, it is a very useful lens and does offer good reach for little cash ;)

At the end of the day, any "superzoom" is a compromise and yes, in this instance the compromise is IQ but unless you're going to go pixel-peeping you will get some cracking shots from it.

I'll try and link a gallery or two of what I managed to do with mine on my old 400D.
