Do any of you use Wiki as a promotional tool?

Wikipaedia is written by us, the users right? So would it be beneficial to do a write-up on your self as a photographer and on your business name to effectively place it in the annuls of 'net notoriety?'

With the obvious links to your business website etc, wouldn't this help with your SEO?

To me it sounds a bit crass and self-absorbing to be blowing your own trumpet in such a way but could it be acceptable if someone else penned it for you?

Just thinking aloud :)

BTW, I notice Talk Photography is not listed when maybe it should:(

I find that in business it often pays to "blow your own trumpet".

It encourages others to do it as well but, someone has to start the ball rolling.

Plenty of Facebook pages around and they are written by the subject.

Hadn't even thought of wiki.

Of course you might find your info gets edited by a competitor or an unhappy customer.

I wonder if you can change the wikipedia name in reality, too bored to try though.

For an entry to remain on the system it needs to be of significance, so unless you're a photographer of reknown and of global significance you'll just find the page removed.

David Bailey, Platon, David Hobby they've got entries.

Chase Jarvis, Zack Arias, both well known users of social media for promotion, do not.

Of the 5 Biggest Photographers on the Internet (from this article) only 3 have wikipedia entries, so you've got to be going some to justify an entry.

This is true, the entry for the company I work for (not photography related in any way) initially got pulled twice due to "not significant enough" until someone dug up an article the MD had published in a technical journal in the early 80s relating to some pioneering work he had done on software for personal computers.

Wikipedia really, really does not like entries that are adverts.

Ahh thanks for that guys, I did wonder why it wasn't used more extensively.
