Right guys. I have a 550D, Im getting a 400mm 5.6 come in the post soon, and well after ive saved a few more pennies ill be looking at getting a new camera. Im thinking either..

50D
60D
7D (Little out of my price range)

What you thinking guys? Not sure what to get.

Yes the 7d is a super camera i would go for that .

Agreed on the 7D, up the budget time otherwise you will no doubt regret it and cost more in the long run (think most of us know that feeling)
 
I am currently going through the same questioning as i want to upgrade. I think it depends on what you are going to be shooting.

The first thing to ask yourself will be if you want a BRAND NEW body. Unless it's been sitting on a stockroom shelf for a while you are not going to get a new 50D. The 7D sits around where the 50D used to in the range and the 60D is a bit more of a high end consumer.

The 60D and the 7D have the same sensor, so nothing to fight over there.

The 7D has twin processors so you can shoot at higher frame rate. The 7D has faster and more accurate auto focus so if sport or fast moving wildlife is your thing then you are going to want that. The 7D also has a magnesium body and weather sealing, so if you are going to be out in the elements and potentially bashing you kit about then thats a plus. One thing to consider with the 7D would be a change in media, it uses CF, so that will add extra costs to your already stretched budget.

The 60D is a great camera and and for most users will do everything they want. But if you are wanting that extra performance then pushing the budget to 7D is the better option.

60D for three reasons...
The articulated screen, it'll be there when you want it.
Reportedly slightly better ISO performance than the 7D.
Although it doesn't have MA there seem to be very few reports of lens focusing issues.

If I was in the market for a Canon APS-C it'd be the 60D I'd go for.
 
From those listed the 7D without question, what is it the 550 can't do btw ?
 
The 7d has better AF system than all of them and higher frames per second and feels nice in the hand, I didn't realise how small my old 450d was. Noise wise not sure how you can have the same sensor and then say in the same sentence it produces a noisier image :) That's just down to noise reduction within the camera which has several different settings.

I went from a 450d to a 7d The thing I use most is the extra AF features it's a big leap in £. I love it though it's cracking!

I'm not sure that it's down to NR as such as in NR settings as you describe but different or perhaps better processing, which may amount to the same thing if by different means. Whatever. I've read several reviews which seem to be saying the the 60D performs better in this respect, suffering less noise and banding. The reviews are there to be read.
