Wildlife photography lens

IMHO is be VERY surprised if you find a Nikon version in anything other than rough condition or a very old model. You might find a sigma around that price, tele converter will be extra too. I might be selling my VR mk1 version but will be looking at way over £2.5k for that!

But I've just seen a Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 at £800 over at MPB... which probably won't help you, since you ask for USD?
 
1000 usd budget for a 300mm 2.8 is very tight,at best you may pick up a older afs mk1 non vr for £1500-2000 depending on condition (couple sold on ebay at this price recently,also aperture sold one at £1850)

would a nikon 300mm f4 be any good? the lens and 1.4 tc may be within your budget 2nd hand. its a very good lens especially at its price.

I just want to be able to get 400-500mm of magnification from a prime lens for les than a 1000 usd it can be used
 
You might be able to get to 4/500mm with a zoom - there are sigma variants available or the old nikon 80-400mm within your budget, but nothing that's going to get close to an f2.8 aperture.

The best I can come up with close to the price would be the old style sigma 120-300mm f2.8, but even then you'll need to do quite a bit of hunting to find one in your price range.

I really think the nikon 300mm f4 will be your best option at your given budget

What camera do you use? I'm guessing a crop sensor (dx) camera. A 300mm f4 would be an equivalent of 450mm in 35mm terms at f4. With a 1.4 tc it would be 300 x1.4 = 420mm or 630mm in 35mm terms at f5.6.

The 300mm f4 is a cracking lens, fantastic for the price. Its a combo I use regularly for wildlife, here's a recent photo of a Water Vole taken recently. Its a full size image with only a very slight crop to straighten it. It was taken from 6.3m away so quite close but they are quite small.
