Will a 17-5mm Tamron remove the need for my Nifty Fifty?

I am about to receive a 17-50mm Tamron, that I expect to keep on my camera most of the time.

My question is, will I still need the 50mm f1.8 that I already have?

Or will I not miss it... (I realise it depends on the photos I want to take but just wondering what other peoples experiences are...)

To me, no lens would replace a 50mm prime, but only you can decide that.

Remember the Tammy will never be as fast as your 50mm.

Only if you want shoot at f2 or f1.8 at 50mm

I kept mine and fine I still use it as much. The Tamron isn't as sharp as the nifty imo.

It is sharp though.

I didn't like the 50mm on a crop either so i sold it with the intention of getting the 35mm prime but still haven't.

As others have said, it's a personal thing as to whether you'll miss it

I'd keep hold of it, esp for what you'd get selling it on. If you haven't touched it for a good number of months, then might be worth selling on at that point...

I plan on getting the Tamron also but the aim is to replace the kit lens. I'll be keeping the 50mm 1.8 as although I've not used the Tamron, I can't imagine it will be as sharp at 50mm

Mine was, well in the centre anyway, that's why i felt it was little point keeping it.

Mine was as sharp as a tack, and offered more flexibility than the 50mm at times. However, there are plenty of times when only a 50mm will do!

On your 5d maybe but but a 35mm is more useful on a crop anyway.

I was talking about on my 40d which it lived on for almost 2 years, but I take your point. A lot of what I shot with the Tamron was at the shorter end. Having invested in a 28mm f1/8 that was a great length on the 40d too

Haha, I've been considering a 35mm f/2 for my 5D

After I bought the 17-50, I rarely ever used my old 50mm 1.8D. Ended up selling it on to fund a flash unit at the time. Now I have the 50mm 1.8G, and again, it rarely gets use as the 24-70 is just so good. Unless I want very shallow DOF for portraits ... but if I have the room, the 70-200 from a bit of a distance gives better results.

If the 17-40 is on its way then I guess you'll know the answer in a few months. It's hardly something to concern yourself about is it? If you find you dont use it then you'll probably sell it and if you do then you obviously wont.

I have the 1.8G and use both, the Tammy is great but you can't beat the prime!

There's two reasons I've held onto my 50mm even though I've almost always had that length covered by other zooms.

Firstly it's always good to have a 1.4 (or 1.8 in the OPs case) in your bag. Secondly, and the main reason for me, is because of the small size of the lens.

If I'm heading out with the missus and 3 kids, I want my camera set up to be as small as possible, simply because there's enough bags, prams, etc to bring already. So I stick the 50mm on, take the grip off, and I have as compact a set up as I can get, but one that still gives great image quality.

I can't see me ever getting rid of mine!

If i was using a d700 i would have kept mine too, but on a crop its less useful.
