Will a Spyder or similar calibrate a notebook LCD screen?

I have seen a few of these screen calibration gizmo's popping up every -so -often & I am wondering if any of those will calibrate a MSI U100 10' lcd screen (MSI is running on windows XP)...

I have an external disc drive (which can be attached via USB) for the software to run, but I have also fitted one of those screen protector's (thin sheet of plastic) so will that cause any problems with calibration - thats if it can be calibrated....

normally with laptop\netbooks, your brightness will reduce when you take power cable out to save energy. if you do calibrate it, do it with power in and remember to edit with the power in!!

Thanks for that guys...

So with this screen protector thingy - it wont make the slightest bit of difference to the calibration process then...

It shouldn't do. It'll take that into account when it calibrates (as it can only see the light that passes through it).

But, aside from the problems you may encounter with screen dimming when there's no power, I don't believe there's a laptop out there that has an IPS display, so you'll encounter brightness and contrast inconsistencies between the top and bottom of the screen while viewing.

So, while it may be colour accurate, your brightness and contrast levels could be way off depending on the angle at which you view the screen. But, it's no different than using a cheap monitor with a desktop in this respect.

That is one thing I have noticed.... Sometimes when viewing some shots that I have to lift the notebook closer and tilt it to see if it makes any difference to the picture that I am viewing....

Can be a pita at times.. sometimes I brighten/darken the pic slightly then move to get comfy or lean to grab a cuppa & all of a sudden its too bright or even darker when I sit back....

Yeah, that's just an inherent problem with laptop displays and even calibration won't fix it - of course, as long as it's colour accurate, and your histogram looks good, it should give you a good idea. :)

 John... Seems that you have yet saved me more money ;) not only on this but on that lens as well:thumbs:

I calibrate my laptop screen with a Spyder - works fine!

The only thing to note on top of the power/brightness thing is that ambient light and the screen angle (on a laptop) plays a part in how you view an image on screen so try to edit in similar lighting conditions to when you calibrated.

There have certainly been some with IPS displays previously - disappointingly they also seem to come not so great specs. Not in the market for one at the minute so I'm not sure if any at the moment, but I'd be surprised if there weren't.

There certainly may have been the odd one or two at some point (I think only the Thinkpad T60 had the option, and it was a 4:3 display, not widescreen), but there are currently none in production that I know of, nor for some time. As you say, the specs suck - because nobody's made any laptops with IPS displays for a while.

Dont spose that you'll loan it out would you :whistling:

I've just been looking and it seems you're right - surely there's a market for a good spec laptop with an IPS display.

While I was looking I came across this - obviously designed for graphics/photography work (built in wacom tablet and screen calibrator!) but still doesn't have an IPS display, so must be a good reason (power consumption). Even without the IPS I'd happily work with this if it wasn't for the £1200 price tag for the bottom end of the range!

Oddly enough, the iPad comes with an IPS display. So it's quite possible that may force laptop manufacturers to start upping their game.

I would but it was a loaned one in the first place!

Is it the one thats being loaned out on here.. There was a post somewhere (lost the link to the thread) where you add your name to the list and then pass it on to the next in line...

That's the one - it's worth having a search for the thread!

I was wondering if that was the same one... will have to have another look thru an see if I can find it again.... Cheers
