Hi

Only had the 400D for a couple of months now but getting really drawn to bird photography, dabbled in a few other subjects but keep coming back to birds.
I have a canon 75-300, lens but finding it a little short, but getting a longer lens is starting to get into serious money, so my question is would something like this be of any use.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300378322374&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

will this work with my camera and what are the pro's and cons of something like this???

Or would i be better getting some lens converter to double the length of the canon lens?? what would the image quality be like with the converters on??

Thanks

Spike

It's an older version of the lens and you may find that it has not been re-chipped to work with DSLR's....maybe you've got time to contact the seller and ask him to confirm compatability (gives you a get out if required). Personally, any seller who states "no returns accepted" would get a wide berth from me.

Chances of this working with your camera is slim had one years ago while it worked with my eos 600 film camera it would'nt work with my newer 50e this lens was super seeded with a hsm version which worked with the early d30 and d60 but not with later bodies so even if it was chipped chances are it still would not work with yours you would need to check lens mount the guy says it works with a manual minolta camera which means he's using an adpter one way or the other which means you might have to manually focus the lens
if it was me i would pass on it

The problem with the 75-300mm lens is that after 200mm it get fairly soft.

Using a convertor will exacerbate this problem and the CA.

Prsonally if birds are going to be your thing you really should think about L glass - expensive but the best.

Something like the 300mm L IS USM costs about £1100 new but gives superb results and coupled with a Canon 1.4 or 2x extender will give you a super long lens at a "reasonable" price.

Unfortunately quality costs money.

Some people on here also favour the Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens which is about half the price of the Canon lens but with nowhere the quality although it may be ideal for a restricted budget.

I would dispute the quality issue about the Sigma it can produce this which I would say is up there with the Canon 100-400 a much used birding lens.

And if you want a direct comparison of those two lenses this is a 100% crop one shot with the Canon and the other with the Sigma from the same position. I would estimate the lighthouse was about a mile away. You tell me which was which.

As regards the lens on eBay I would also say give it a miss, as you will probably end up spending again to get something you will be happy with.

Thanks guys looks like Iwill be saving for a while then.

Of get the birds to come closer lol.
