Semi new photography lover but still stuck on the technical things of photography. I dont know the ins and outs of lenses!

I have a canon 600d with the standard 18-55mm but i REALLLLLLLLLLLY want the 50mm lens its everything i want for blog photography and newborn photography

I found this one can you tell me if it'll work on my camera and should it be so cheap?!

I've got the Canon 600d, and also have that 50mm lens. It's fabulous at the price! Yes, it's a bit plasticy and light, the manual focus ring is fiddly, but it's £65, which is a bargain!! I LOVE it, and use it a lot. The narrow DOF is fantastic for portraits and low light. I recommend it highly!

PS: Yes it IS supposed to be that cheap! I paid about that for mine.
 
They dont call it the nifty fifty for nothing. It's a great lens, fantastically sharp.

The 50mm f1.8 a great lens don't get me wrong, especially for the price tag, but due to it's design, it can sometime produce poor bokeh (image quality out of focus areas), but the slight drawbacks are easily overlooked when you look at the cost of the lens and most people have one in their camera bag.

Personally I prefer the 50mm f1.4 version, all around better lens, but you're paying nearly £200 more.
 
a 35mm or so prime might be good too, if you can stretch to that aswell

Got a good point there about focus although as mention the price tag was the deciding point for me! Great little lens, and nice to hold the camera rather then the glass for a change. I find that I might not get the focus perfect every time but when I do they are always keepers. I find its best at about f2.8 and always give a bit of distance and then crop in pp or 9/10 it will be OOF.
 
Whenever I read or hear about thin DoF and portraits I wonder if I'm the only one who usually wants more than half an eye in focus.

I'm a bit of a shallow DoF lover myself when I think that the subject suits that look but when shooting a person I normally want quite a bit of that person to be reasonably sharp and usually I don't get that at f1.4 or f1.8 or even f5.6 at times subject to lens and camera to subject distance and this for me throws into question the need to use a wide aperture prime. In low light and for a shallow DoF look, yes, wide apertures can be very nice but for a baby / person shot / portrait? Well, if you're sure then you're sure.

I rememder when you would hardly have been able to give away a 50mm f1.8 lens
 
I think that they can be very useful.

I loved my Sigma 50mm f1.4 on my 5D and also the Sigma 85mm f1.4 (50mm gives an equiv FoV of about 80mm on APS-C.) These days I have four f1.8 or f1.4 50mm's and three 85mm's and for MFT I have 20mm f1.7, 25mm f1.8 and 45mm f1.8 (40/50mm and 90mm equiv FoV) but I think that the use of wide apertures needs thought and needs to suit the subject.
 
yes i am planning on getting other lenses but iwant to upgrade from my kit lens, its not just newborn photgraphy i want it for i would use other lenses for that too but i do want it for blog photography too in the beauty industry, thankyou all for your answers i think this is the lens i am going to be getting!
 
Not trying to talk you out of this lens, cos its great, but if you want an almost direct upgrade to the kit lens, the tamron 17-55 f2.8 is a great lens. The non-vc version is sharper.
 
The 50mm F1.8 is a great little lens and for the money is a good one to have in your kit bag...

If you decided it wasn't for you, you'd probably be able to sell on at not a lot of loss.
 
Great little lens, though on the crop sensor I found it to be a little too telephoto. I am now looking at the 24mm pancake canon are about to release with interest. Though that is about 3 times more expensive.

Great shout - I has the non-vc and loved it. For the O/P it might be ideal as it gives more flexibilty in focal range than a prime and at a constant 2.8 is more than enough DOF for product shots, most newborn stuff & blog videos.

You can pick up a really good used one for about £150 these days, if I had a crop body I'd deinitely still have and use mine.

All that being said, I think the O/P will still go for the nifty :)
