will this lens fit?

It will fit your camera but because it's an AF mount you won't have any auto focus. You'll need an AF-S mount for that.

From what I can see, seems to be Silent wave integrated motor. Think AF-SWIM was too long :)

I opted for the 35mm f/1.8G when I had my D60 so it would autofocus, a little more but worth the quick AF. You could pick up a second hand one for £30~ more than the 50mm.

Here is the list I always refered to, a little out dated as new lenses have come onto the market in the last year or so, but it still has the bulk of the Nikon lenses.

excellent, thanks for all the help. does anyone use the 35mm? if so does it get your recommendation?

I use the 35mm G lens, I sold my 18-55mm to fund it and I don't regret it at all. A fantastic lens for the price and only needs stopped down a touch to get nice sharp images.

From a traditional point of view, 35mm lens on a 1.5 crop body gives a 52.5mm equivalent field of view, not that far off 50mm on a 35mm film camera or full frame body.

So technically, it gives you the 'normal' view (natural look to the human eye) and maybe a bit more practical in situations such as going out to dinner with friends, where 50mm on a crop body may give a too tight field of view.
