D3000 sorry not 300
nope
and I hear the Sigma is better
go for the APO version identified by a red ring at the top of the barrel
and you need a built-in motor too.....''here''
Focus system: Auto/ Manual (built-in motor)
Here's a novel idea! Order the lens to be picked up in store then take your camera with you when you go to collect the lens so you can fit it and check that it's suitable.
Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro: Handling and features
This lens is very lightweight, but without feeling flimsy. The fit and finish of the materials used is good and a metal lens mount has been used, which will stand up to many lens changes.
Focus is powered by a standard built-in micro-motor
If it is exactly the same as the one in the link, it will auto focus on any Nikon SLR. I had one for my D5000 (same as D3000, i.e no internal motor) and it worked fine. Just check it is the Di LD model.
There's a list here.

However be careful if you do go for a Sigma 70-300 APO. I saw a used one and the advert mentioned that it would not AF cameras without a focus motor.
I think Sigma might have altered the design of this lens, so be careful with used examples.
.....Tamron has more lenses like that (only built-in motor no designation), but you can see if the lens has a built-in motor if the productnumber has the addition of -II, for instance: Model A17NII for the AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2.
