Windows 10 Nikon nef codec

Who the f*** uses "Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, and Windows Photo Viewer" to preview their "NEF (RAW) images"? Whoops - sorry, Mike.

Surely there are more capable vehicles for such duties?

Windows is a very good OS these days, but beyond that has never been and is still barely about imaging.

Or am I out of touch?
 
One reason is to view thumbnails in the standard Windows Explorer file manager. The Nikon codec is probably more up to date than what MS (or Apple) includes natively, and with Windows (but not Mac OS) you have the option of installing the codec if your camera's raw format is not yet supported by the OS and you just see generic image icons.
