Yosemite is about on par with 7 for reliability, can't really comment on 8/8.1 as never used it for long and its early days for 10 but so far so good.

Am I the only one laughing at the concept of going to apple to avoid a software developer who forces users down certain roads? :p

Nope.
 
Apple cant be compared to windows directly as Microsoft develop there products to integrate with AD for corporate use with aspects like group policy. Something Apple have never had to do. Now if they did imagine how much they would f@ck that up

There are other directories available, and used in very secure environments, and in use long before AD or Domain Manager became available and where millions of computers are integrate with and receive their authorisations from...

Sure, but that is more like an architectural difference between *nix type systems and the direction Windows took. One could see it as a plus that the others didn't approach it from that direction...
 
I don't see it either way flavours for all seasons my comparison was Microsoft develop there products primarily to be reliable and secure in business and to also provide a good experience for home users.

Apple are not constrained with these issues so focus on the user experience almost 100% so much as people like to simply compare apple and windows they can't be directly compared.

its like @neil_g said his deployments have been rock solid as that's what Microsoft need to work out of the box, business delivery.

I don't disagree with that, although a large part of that is naturally stable hardware selection as well.

For myself I have no problem selecting the best components and make that work on windows, and realise that that sometimes means a search for the best drivers or hold off migrating to the latest version etc. for business I'd be looking for reference platforms that are very stable. Like the surface pro, like the dell and hp and Lenovo and IBM of this world.

I think you can have it both.
 
exactly I have like many on here made a good living working in IT and quite honestly I wouldn't have Apple stuff at home as I spend to much of my day in Microsoft products so its common sense for me to have a similar experience at home, also the free TechNet helps :-) with all my OSs free.

I personally can't see me moving from W7 at home for about a year as the wife and I have uber stable PC's and laptops that perform very well, most of our use is internet, email and MS office for our business. The thought of the issues of upgrading for little or no benefit at this time just don't move me.
 
And that is where it is very personal. My Surface Pro 3 is Microsoft's reference build of Windows 8.1 at the time, and it feels like Windows 10 was made for it with features like continuum and the likes. For me when doing software development which includes drivers and services, it is very useful to have other Windows 10 features like proper multi-screen support, multiple desktop environments, and not least finally proper HDPI support which is just lacking in previous versions. It has transformed my interaction with the system.

For my wife and children they are all on Apple and it was the best decision as I haven't provided any IT support at home since 2007 I think :) With Office 365, Adobe CC the interoperability issues have totally been eliminated as well.

One thing I can tell you, besides Visual Studio for MS type stuff, I much prefer a Mac or Linux system as a development environment for the like of JAVA and Ruby on Rails etc. Getting it to work properly, switching versions, the editors etc is all just so much better and slicker. So much so that I for that stuff just run VMWare and do it in a virtualised environment...But again with Integrated Development Environments like Jetbrains Intelli IDEA it is totally cross platform as well, or if you prefer free then there is Eclipse.

it made sense for us to start rolling to 10 in business sooner rather than later as we're bound by the same time limit on the volume licencing free 7 to 10 upgrade. started with the IT team, testing all business platforms and then roll to users.

the only thing we found doesn't really work too well is Hyper-V management, but a 3rd party app has plugged the breach until this bug is resolved. oh and no RSAT tools yet for 10.
 
After the horrors I heard about Windows 8 (which I cant recall what are TBH), and posts like this, I'll be waiting before I instal 10. My PC is working fine at the moment on 7 and unless I really have to I think I will just leave it alone. I bet you cant go back if you hate it?

You can configure Windows 10 to download updates and you choose when to install them when you like, just as in Win8.
Just as in Win 8 you can choose not to install any optional update.
 
Put win 10 on my dell xps soon after it was available, no real problems other than IE11 is crap now (forcing me to use edge?) and I always used windows to import my pictures to the laptop, usually naming the folder with the date and relative subject, now it goes to /pictures and into a month/year folder and I cant find a way round it other than using something else. I was hoping thumbnails from my 7dmk2 cr2's would be visible as well.

IE11 and edge are 2 different browsers. edge is limited in the fact that it does not allow flash or java (excellent really). in edge you should have an option called "open in internet explorer" or IE should be available from the search bar (unless its a pro only option).
 
Settings/System/Default Apps - Just choose which application you want as default and it will stop forcing you to use anything.

No idea about importing, I just use Lightroom for that kind of stuff.

Yeah I know the difference between them and have the ability to use whichever but ie11 is painfully slow since I upgraded, started using chrome more now though! I didn't mean it was Forcing me to use Edge more like pushing me towards it!
 
My W10 Insider Program PC upgraded to build 10525 a few days ago and Edge won't download from gigabyte.com. When I try to download the W10 drivers for that mobo, Edge just closes!

There are a few websites that are s***. Waitrose.com I've always loved and hated, I don't know what they do to their website as it makes everything so unresponsive, but yes doesn't work on Edge either. Fortunately plenty of other browsers are available ;)

No you can't. Care to take a screen grab of the window where you can set that?

Currently on a dual boot system while I evaluate how badly this auto update thing will screw me over, so I'd be very interested to see how you've managed to get updates working as they did on 8.

Where in there do I select which updates I wish to install? I can schedule the installation at a specific time, and I can defer installation. That's it.


I hope you're right, because it's the only thing that's annoying me about it right now... now I've stopped chasing graphics cards around the device manager (You can't have a WDDM 1.3 card with a WDDM 2.0 card in teh same Win 10 system).. As I had a Fermi based card for my second monitor, and a Maxwell based main card, Win10 woudl have needed both 1.3 and 2.0 drivers - not a problem for 8, but a no no for 10... so dumped a GT720 in for the second screen.

I wonder whether you could do it via a WSUS server. If I recall correctly, been I while since I administered a Windows domain, you can choose on the WSUS server which updates to provide as part of the policy and drivers was one of them and separated out from the rest.

Naturally not something for everyone unless they've got several machines at home. But I wonder whether there is a business opportunity there? Hmm would people want to pay for an alternative, trusted and security certified, update source via a WSUS system, where they get all the updates excluding the drivers? And perhaps a premium model where they can get even further granularity on updates of other software?

Wouldn't that require all home machines to be on a domain server? Not exactly a home solution if so.

Hence the idea of providing it as a service ;) In the Linux world it is normal to have alternative source, in the Windows world I think people would be less comfortable with it. And I'm also wondering whether the scale is enough and whether people really would want to pay for it. In other words, is it really that big of an issue or will things calm down over the next few months...

you can set GPO to specify a time. the settings from 7 admx seem to pull through to 10.

if you felt inclined to install your own WSUS.

I've com to the conclusion that it is people who think they know how to use computers who have the most problems.
People who know nothing about computers don't mess about they get a knowledgeable person to sort their computer problems. People who know about computers just get on with it sorting problems out with no fuss.
People who think they know about computers on encountering computers will mess about installing the fix they found at the top of the list in a google search, they will mess about with registry settings and system files, then when it all does not work they get onto forums to blame the manufacturer,

I'm sorry, but windows update was pushing an incorrect driver. Fact.

I'm still waiting for you to show me where I can choose what updates to install in windows ten as per post no. 145.
 
Installed Windows 10 on two desktops and one Laptop at present (all Win 7 Home Premium versions). The 2 desktops went without a hitch. The Laptop not quite so.Everything seemed to go OK, but then I started to get popups appearing on screen and my Virus checking constantly screaming at me that every web page I visited was evil and contained viruses. I had (at that time) only gone to the same website I always had. In the end it got too much and I downloaded an ISO image of Windows 10 from Microsoft's website and did a clean install. Everything seems absolutely fine on the Laptop now, so don't know what the hell happened.

Windows 10 still has some bugs (for me at least), but none that affect my photography. For instance the store on one machine won't install the Netflix or Now TV apps that I've installed on the other two (the app just quits when I try and download). I find mail very buggy and sometimes it will load mails correctly, other times it will just freeze. And on all the PC's the lock screen always boots up with the same image, despite the lock screen being set to windows Spotlight and showing a completely different image when looking in settings or manually locking the PC. I've reverted to using a specific picture for my lock screens rather than spotlight which never seems to change the image.

Also whilst on the lock screen, adding widgets to it, (like mail, weather etc.), only works on one of my 3 PC's with the other 2 showing nothing (despite the settings being identical on all three). Go figure.

However these are just gremlins which I'm sure Microsoft will solve with updates. Overall though, I do like Windows 10. Looks nice, boots and shuts down very quickly, and most importantly all my software seems to run just as well on Win 10 that it did on Win 7.

Well Win7 is going to be supported until 2020 so a great many people (including me) will probably feel the same, although I may download the Win 10 ISO later on when many of these issues have (hopefully) been fixed.

All my photos are backed up to multiple sources.

I've not tried it but (as we have a domain GPO in force) but the local group policy settings can be changed to the point where you can:

Notify before downloading and installing / download updates automatically and notify when ready to install (default) / automatically download and install on the specified schedule.

But can you select which updates to install, and which to not?
