Just spotted this on bbc news site

they seem to be running a bit of a scare story by quoting M$ as not offering upgrade versions of Win7 in Europe but Microsoft say what they will be doing is selling the full version at upgrade prices to licence holders.

Pricing seems good but the home premium upgrade version seems to give the best value for money.

I'm running that now, don't think I'd really miss much in the way of ULTIMATE options

the regulators and MS are just fannying around each other

I thought that win7 should offer a choice of browsers that you can install when you get online...
it's not rocket science...MSIE8 could still remain installed as it's not exactly bloat-ware

That's what the regulators want, but MS are refusing as it would introduce liability & support issues.

If you look across the browser market there's so many to choose from, once MS start including Firefox, Chrome & Opera, you'll get the likes of Camino complaining that it's unfair to them. When would it end.

They've taken the best option, and the regulators are whining like little girls.

As for the pricing, that's quite a nifty bit of side stepping the regulations :)

It's not an "upgrade" because they're shipping full retail version, it's a loyalty discount instead :)
 
They are also doing a pre-order offer see here, for more info have a read through here as well. the uk pre-order link goes live tomorrow apparently. As a mac user i have to say well done to MS, for once the upgrades are sensibly priced and im very tempted to upgrade both my windows machines.
 
If they'll sell it to me for $49 I'll take 3!

Looks like a draw to me.

If you're gonna troll with fanboy stuff, at least play the game ;)
(BTW I'm a full mac user now before you go down that road)

The new price is great, looks set to move a lot of businesses over from XP. Not sure if I will replace Vista with it immediately as i'm pretty happy at the moment, but MS might get a good lot of sales from anti-vista people.

That's not too bad, although whether I would pay £80 just for something that's a bit faster I don't know.

Generally speaking vista is ok, do get the occasional app locking up or taking along time, particularly office. Win 7 is significantly quicker booting and general tasks. Not used it much so far tbh.
 
the trouble with windows 7 is that is sp1 which means it'll still have bugs and stuff and its hard to get compatible programs when a OS first comes out, atleast thats what my uncle told me and he's a computer programmer.
 
Ordinarily that would be true, however it is not the case with Windows 7.

It has been on public Beta for a long time and more recently a public Release Candidate was available. Both are absolutely rock solid, work perfectly for me on a netbook, an old Athlon PC, a new Core 2 Quad PC etc. etc.

This is the most stable a MS OS has ever been at release (well, even pre release). All my programs work, drivers are available for everything and if they aren't 99% of the time Vista drivers work anyway.

In short - your uncle should do some more research about Windows 7, he's assumed it will be like all previous releases which is a million miles from the truth.

LOL, i was thinking the exact same thing, when i was after my R2880 printer drivers i just downloaded the 64bit vista ones, works like a dream, My Dell laptop did not need any drivers loading to get it working all were done when i installed windows 7.
 
Who else has pre-ordered? I ordered Pro @ £80 from ebuyer, but had my order cancelled as theyd run out!!!

Reordered for £89 from Amazon, still a lot better than £99 though!!

Actually cancelled or did you get an email saying it was 'Out of Stock'?

If it was just the out of stock email, that's normal with pre orders at eBuyer.
 
Probably a stupid question but I can't seem to find anything to confirm either way.

Is the Win 7 Home Premium edition upgrade in the link a dual platform upgrade for both 64bit & 32bit or do I need to find an upgrade that specifies it's for 64bit Vista to 64bit Win 7?:help:
 
Does anyone know where to pre-order Ultimate? I'm curious as to the price difference between that and Professional.
 
@Chris L - There is NO UPGRADE VERSION in the UK (or the rest of the EU). All versions are full retail copies, they include both 32bit and 64bit versions and require a completely new installation, wiping all your old data and programs unless you back them up.

@StuD - only Home Premium and Professional are available to pre order currently as this is the offer period and only those two versions are included in the offer. I would expect the retail price for Ultimate to be around £220-£250 when it finally goes on sale.

edit - just seen standard RRP for Professional is £220, so expect Ultimate to be more.

I run 7 (a few of the distro's) on my desktop and vista on my laptop with similar powerplants 7 does kick vista into touch and I don't even think I have gotten round to installing rc1, this is going from day to day usage to heavy gaming.

My desktop has only been off once in the last month and it was a powercut :thumbs:
 
2 x home premium for £89 from Comet with free delivery. Now I just have to wait for October...
