It's not about paranoia, it's principle. I'm anti-authority and all that, and I don't like the idea of being "looked upon". I guess I may have interpreted what I'd heard wrongly.

I don't trust Google an inch either. Read some of their CEO Eric Schmidt's comments on privacy if you want to know why - The Register is a good place to begin. The Chrome browser is their Google's version of the excellent open source Chromium browser rendered no longer open source by the addition of their spyware. SRWare Iron gives all of the benefits of the Chrome browser without Google's code. I can recommend it ;)

If you don't trust Google's intent then Froogle is also worth a look...

I had IE9 on W7 and found I had to click twice to get links to open - especially on this site. Have now gone back to IE8 and the problem has disappeared.
 
Installed SP1 last night on my netbook and although it was managing to download updates from the internet none of my browsers or email clients would work.

Uninstalled PC Tools firewall and turned on the Windows one and it all worked fine after that.
