windows 7 to xp cross over cable

Hi :help:

I am trying to connect laptop win 7 to win xp laptop using a cross over cable,direct to each lan port.
I have searched the net but it seems to be lots of lan settings that dont seem to match, not a hundred percent on knowing what to do so if anyone can point me to web page step by step, would be grateful

Can't help with directions but what flavour of Win7 is it? if it's the home version I think you'll not get it to work anyway as they are crippled as regards networking.

Yep that's a good possibility, I will try though, it seems to be windows 7 has a homegroup system for net working.

Both machines will be in a workgroup ( homegroup )

Your machines must be in the same workgroup to see each other, so you need to make sure that they are both in something thats the same. You can call the workgroup whatever you want.

You then need to make sure that your ip structures are the same.

So you need to go to the network card setup and set up TC/IP so they are similar

Something like

192.168.0.1 for your XP machine
192.168.0.2 for your windows 7 machine. In windows 7 you need to do this in IP version 4.0 as it will also show IP version 6 for your network card.

Whilst your in your network settings make sure file and printer sharing are on.

Now go to the drives you want to share and select the whole drive or directories, right click them and set up a share of your chosen name.

You should then be able to see each pc on the other in explorer.

Wish I lived closer I'd come and sort it for you in a jiffy :D

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I have set the network setting as you suggest and the workgroups, sharing.Connections are active no faults but cant see either computer. will try again another day. Many thanks.

Not really. Home can't connect to a domain but that's about the only thing you can't do with it.
