Windows Live....whats it all about then?

Give me good old Outlook Express any day.

Windows 7 has IE8 - fine, I'm happy with that. But no means of getting at your emails.

Windows Live looks like something else altogether.

What should I do? Firefox? Does it come with email access?

Excuse the ignorance again. When it comes to IT I just like the simple life.

I use Windows Live and think it is pretty simple to use. I have 3 different hotmail accounts linked to it so with the click of 1 button I can check all 3 accounts. Simples. I must admit though that the calendar in Windows Live is horrendous so I never use it. I have Outlook at work and the calendar in that is a lot better.

I might give Thunderbird a try just to see what it's like.

windows live mail is just outlook express with a vista/7 wrapper.. essentially anyway

I thought that windows live mail is a server based email program rather than Outlook Express/WinMail which is client based?

Anthony.

If I change to Thunderbird/Firefox, will I lose access to all my old emails?

If your emails are in outlook, you can back up the outlook file and then import in into thunderbird. There are loads of thunderbird tutorials on the mozilla site to help you with getting your old mail into it.

nope, its part of the windows live programs pack

Umm... I understood that Windows Live was based on the Microsoft servers ie. 'in the cloud' and therefore all data is stored there and not on your computer. Hence my assertion that Live Mail is a server(web) based solution rather than a client based (own computer hard drive) solution.

I use a SkyDrive and that is based on the data being held on the MS servers and not on my computer - isn't that part of Windows Live?

Anthony.

windows live mail is a mail application in the same way as outlook express is/was and is fully workable offline etc.

it stores its data (downloaded mail from POP3/SMTP etc etc) to:

C:\Users\<Windows user account>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

:)

i think youre confusing the application with the web based email service offered under hotmail.com and live.com addresses?

Thanks for clearing that up. Is it me or are all the similar sounding names just a little confusing?

Anthony.

Microsoft confused themselves. They started out using Live as a reference to web hosted applications, but they mixed up terminology and came out with the likes of Windows Live Mail, which isn't web based... ish. Well, it is if you use it for Hotmail / live.com mail. Then there's Windows Live Messenger which is Messenger but erm, live (yet it's the same, but also offered beside the non live, so... ??)

Anyway, ditch it and go for Thunderbird is my advice:thumbs:. If you want a calendar with it, get hold of Lightning for Thunderbird (it can even sync with Google Calendar so you get your calendar in Thunderbird and on the web).

I think it has support for importing mail from Outlook Express. Not sure about Live Mail, but probably can export and import.

If all your mail is stored on the mail server it will pick it up from there anyway, but a typical home user probably has it all stored locally.

Whilst you're at it, pick up a better browser too like Google Chrome or Firefox ;)

Firefox/Thunderbird looks like the way to go.....
